Getting into Business School

Hi,
My name is Shahrukh from The Lyceum School and I’m currently in my A-levels first year. I got 7A’s and 2B’s in my O’levels. Currently,I have Accounts, Economics, Mathematics and General Paper as my subjects. I am appearing for Mathematics and Economics AS level this june. I intend to do MBA or Masters in Economics(M.E) which leads us to our first question whether MBA or M.E has a better scope in Pakistan and abroad?

I, like many others aspire to get enrolled in a good and reputed university abroad. However,more than half way through my A-Level first year i realized that my subject combination isnt good enough to get me into good universities abroad like LSE which does not give importance to Accounts and demands traditional sciences like Psychology so now i am in a fix. Are there any other renowned universities abroad which offer MBA or M.E and accept students having the subject combo that i have?

If there are such universities,then what is there criteria for scholarships ?

Also, do all reputed business schools in the U.S require SAT II or is SAT I good enough for admissions? What is the average SAT score that such business schools demand?

Advice needed in chosing a career in the field of Acturial Sciences

My name is Abbas Tejani and I am currently studying at The Lyceum School.

I got 10 A in O’Levels (St.Patricks High School).  I am currently in my first year of A levels. Subjects that I have are: Economics, Accounts, Accelerated Maths, Psychology and General English(mandatory). I plan to give further maths privately next year.

Choosing a career is the most important step. Ive deecided to go into the field of Acturial Sciences.

My queries include:

1) Is it a good choice?
2) What scope does it have in pakistan and abroad?
3) Which universities provide acturial sciences programmes in pakistan and abroad(prefebly canada or uk)
4) How much financial aid is available( especially in canada)
5) What courses would i have to take?
6) How much time does it take to become a full fledge acturier?

Moving back to Pakistan

Background:

My name is Ammar, and I have been living in Houston, Tx for the last 6 years. I completed my undergrad in computer science from University of Houston in 2005 and am just about to finish my MBA from Rice University. I also have been working full time since 2005 in a software firm here in Houston as a software engineer.

After spending all this time in the States, I am seriously thinking about moving back to Karachi (where my family lives) or somewhere closer to my family (e.g middle east). I am currently single and will have to partially support my family financially once I finish grad school.

The conundrum

Currently I’m considering 2 career options:

  1. Find a job somewhere in the Middle East (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain etc) and settle down over there. I will still be living away from my parents but will have a better standard of living and Karachi will only be a couple of hours away. Expected starting salary is about 15K Dirham/Month – with my expenses being around 10K /month.

    Opportunities via this route:

    • Get further relevant work experience after my MBA and position myself to work up the corporate ladder in the middle east region.

  2. Take my current US job with me to Pakistan and work remotely from Karachi. Expected monthly salary is Rs. 180K. Monthly expenses around Rs. 50K/month. My manager can only guarantee this job to exist for about a year and half. So, I might be jobless after 18 months or it could even go on for longer (depending on the work that needs to be done). I have been working in this firm (Lets call this company Xyz Technologies) for four years now and have a thorough understanding how the whole system works etc.

    Opportunities via this route

    • Besides doing my regular job, I can try and get more projects from Xyz Technologies and hire a few people in Karachi and try to do most of their software development in Pakistan. This would give me a good boost to start my own business in Pakistan, but I would be dependent on ONE client for some time until I get my act together and find more clients.
    • I can start participating part time in my father’s small business in Karachi while I’m working my xyz technology job. He’s got a small setup in the garments industry with both local and a small exports arm. My father will probably retire in 5-7 years, so I’m hoping to learn the ropes from him and then if I loose my xyz job in 18 months, I can work with my father full time.
    • Since I’m currently single and have little responsibilities, I can take the risks associated with dumping the cushy corporate level job and try out on my own. I have two opportunities, starting my own tech business and working with my dad, while still making decent money to support myself. I might not get a chance like this later on in my life (esp when I have more baggage to carry around)

    Problems via this route

    • Everybody tells me that I might be wasting the $70,000 I spent on my MBA if I just wanted to go work in some dusty factory in Pakistan. Even though I dont completely agree with that, I do believe that I have a better chance of securing a good job in the middle east right now (when Im coming from the US) and a fresh graduate compared to later.
    • I might be out of work in about 18 months if things dont work out .. am I willing to take that chance?
    • I’m pretty sure I can do it, but everybody in Pakistan (including my family) keeps telling me that I’m too naive and spoiled by the good business ethics in the US. Doing business in Pakistan is really horrible and I won’t be able to adjust easily. Everybody is trying to get out of Pakistan .. I’m just crazy if I wanna go back there!

I’ve tried to paint the big picture here .. and I’m sorry this email has become really long .. but I hope people at pkstudent can give me some advice regarding this .. especially by somebody who is working currently in Pakistan.

What do you think I should do ?

Going for an Accounting degree after A’Levels

Hi,

My name is Anas and I am studying accounting, economics and mathematics for my A’Levels at The Lyceum. I will be giving my AS exam this june of maths and economics. I got 7 A’s and 2 B’s in my O’Levels.

I basically have two questions:

  1. Can a person who has a degree in accounting from the US work in Pakistan? What about UK and Canada?
  2. Furthermore, will only 3 subjects suffice to get me an admission or will i need a fourth one? If yes, which one would you recommend?
  3. What course of study should opt for if I want to become a Chartered Accountant?

p.s i am giving all four components of maths in the first year. Normally, only two components are given in he first year and other two in the final year.

How should I go about to apply for Fulbright Scholarship for MBA

I am currently working at a good foreign bank for the last 7 yrs, with total work experience of about 10+ years in the banking industry. In order to further enhance my academic qualifications along with future career growth prospects, I am looking to do another MBA in Venture Capital & Entrepreneurship, a new field for the Pakistani financial market. In this regard I have coupe of queries:

1. I have heard Fulbright scholarship is preferable for MBA prgrams as these are more expensive compared to others.

2. Will it be OK if I have all three of my referrals done from work instead of a professor, since it has been a long time since I graduated and I am not sure I will be able to arrange one from a teacher.

Looking for a University that offers Masters in Project & Construction Management

I have completed my 4 years Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering from NED university of Engg. & Tech., Karachi, Pakistan in 2004. I have more than 4 years of Project & Construction Management experience.

I am currently working at Pak. Real Estate Investment & Management Company as Manager (Projects).  Now, I feel that it is the necessity of time to do Masters in Project & Construction Management to enhance my knowledge and skills and for better implementation in our Projects in Pakistan.
Could you advise me from where i should do Masters in the above mentioned fields ? and what is the funding / scholarship opportunities for me in that Country.

Me and my husband are applying for Fulbright Scholarship , this year , to begin from 2009. My husband is an MBA from IBA and I have done my BCS from FAST.

He is applying for MBA in Entrepreneurship and my self for Masters in Teaching/Education. Our purpose is to study abroad but we don’t have an option for leaving behind our kids. I have mentioned that in my Fulbright application “Additional Information” part ,which we are to submit in a day.

My query is that how should both of us present our application that the authorities do not get offended by our different circumstances. Have there be a similar case in the past too? Thanks.

I am Shahzaib and I am a student at NU – FAST where I am placed on deans list with GPA of 3.75+.

I will graduate in May09. I am applying for Fulbright Masters Scholarship program Can I apply? Kindly tell me what are my chances of getting it and what likely universities would I get in, I am applying for electrical engineering and computer science.

Also what universities should I mention on my application. I expect to get atleast 750 in Q, 570 in V and 4 in writing in GRE, (I have taken SAT i know what i am talking about) hopefully i would do much better. Can I get into likes of UTexas Austin, Maryland, georgiatech etc. Plus from where can i get the sample letters and essays.

I want to study in an abroad university on Scholarship

I am Kamran from Lahore Pakistan. I am a student of BBA 2nd year enrolled in 4 years BBA Program in Pak Aims university. I have a dream of studying abroad, want to do some BS Program in IT or Business and IT, and ofcourse I do have potential. But the major problem I am facing at the moment is Finance. Since I belong to a middle class family, Studying abroad is not affordable for me at this time.

My university is giving an opportunity to transfer the credit hours to Bedfordshire University Luton. But the problem is that I am unable to bear the university fees. I am sure that I’ll be able to bear my expenses while doing a job over there, Once I reach. So I request pkstudent.com to provide their feedback about this.

How can I get into an MBA program in UK?

My name is Hassan and I have completed my BBA(HONS) from BUITMS (Balochistan University of Information Technology and Management Sciences). To be precise I completed BBA (Hons) this February 2008 with a CGPA of 3.62 / 4 . Now I want to do MBA the reasons for the desire of doing so are the following:

1. Most of the university teachers advised me to do MBA, as according to them despite increasing the duration of BBA from 2 to 4 years still companies / organizations take it as a less appropriate level of education and prefer MBA students for any job openings. But i disagree with it as in my opinion BBA(Hons) and MBA have same course repetition.

2. Many of the friends, seniors and family professionals have said that your last degree counts a lot and so you must get it from abroad and in abroad UK is the best for Management studies and this will help secure a good job.

3. For MBA two institutions are very famous and have a high ranking (LUMS and IBA). As far as LUMS is concerned its very expensive and the total expenditure for MBA comes to ~ Rs.1100000 to 1200000 so i feel that if have to spend this much then why not spend a little more to study abroad which might cost in the range of Rs 1500000 to 1800000 and I feel will provide me an even better opportunity for learning and then of course getting a good job.

And when we talk about IBA I feel that they have a very tough test. This conclusion is based on the fact that the newspaper is littered with adds of preparation for its test ( I have heard news that IBA itself gives adds for admissions in IBA entry test preparation classes. Not confirmed). So if the test is so tough what hope does an average student like me has?

So based on the above reasons which i have mentioned, to the best of my knowledge, I desire that I should go for MBA to UK. I have no university in mind from where I specifically want to do MBA it could be any university provided its good in terms of ranking. Now as far as finance is concerned I don’t have a lot of financial resources but have been told that you are allowed to work some hours while studying and the remuneration is good and can support an individual financially very well. Plus I know universities give scholarships based on academic performance I would certainly try my best to secure them as well. So now the only matter is which university I should apply to? For this and for the procedure which I require to get my self enrolled in any university I need help of pkstudent.com. Also any help and information regarding securing scholarships for foreign university will be very much appreciated.

Any suggestions or comments to make me think any otherwise are most welcome.

Should I do an undergraduate degree from Kings College, UK or LSE, Pakistan.

My name is Akram and I am currently doing my A levels from Aitchison College Lahore. In my O levels (Aitchison College) I got 3 As and 2 Bs. My parents and my own wish was that somehow I could enter into LUMS to do my bachelors degree but unfortunately I didn’t get the admission.

I have got admission in Lahore School of Economics Pakistan and Kings College London. A lot of people tells me that Lahore School of Econ is not a good university to attend and might ruin my future. My parents are kind of willing to send me to Kings College london to pursue an undergrad degree in Business Management. The degree is of 3 years with yearly tuition fees of 10,000 pounds and expected 7,000 pounds of living expenses. On the other hand Lahore School of Economics yearly tuition fees is around 200,000 Rs.

What should I do? Is spending so much money in undergrad worth it?
