My name is Abbas Tejani and I am currently studying at The Lyceum School.
I got 10 A in O’Levels (St.Patricks High School). I am currently in my first year of A levels. Subjects that I have are: Economics, Accounts, Accelerated Maths, Psychology and General English(mandatory). I plan to give further maths privately next year.
Choosing a career is the most important step. Ive deecided to go into the field of Acturial Sciences.
My queries include:
1) Is it a good choice?
2) What scope does it have in pakistan and abroad?
3) Which universities provide acturial sciences programmes in pakistan and abroad(prefebly canada or uk)
4) How much financial aid is available( especially in canada)
5) What courses would i have to take?
6) How much time does it take to become a full fledge acturier?

Abbas,
As far as a career in Acturial Sciences is concerned, it has been continuously rated in the top five careers in the US. So you can’t go wrong with it, but from what I’ve heard it’s a lot of hard work and you must have really good quantitative skills to pull it off. And from that perspective, your alevels subjects (Accounting, Math and Further Maths) should prove to be helpful to prepare you for your CAS exams in the future.
Here’s a list of schools that offer Actuarial Education:
http://www.actuary.com/actuarial-science-schools/
http://www.soa.org/education/resources/actuarial-programs/actuarial-college-listings/actuarial-college-listings-academic-relations-details.aspx
I currently do not know what schools offer Actuarial Sciences program in Pakistan, so somebody else will have to pitch in with that information.
It usually takes anywhere from 6-10 years to pass all the exams (about four years for associateship & 7-8 year for the fellowship) But you can usually start working as an actuarial assistant as soon as you pass a couple of exams. Thats one of the good things about this career that you can earn decent money while studying for your exams.
As far as financial aid is concerned, it varies from school to school and you’ll have to contact the schools you’re interested in to find out more.
Good Luck
Abbas,
Here’s a link to the blog of Jawwad Farid a Fellow Society of Actuaries (Chicago). He has his own Actuary firm called Alchemya in Karachi and has some uselful insight about Actuarial firms in Pakistan.

Here’s what I found regarding A Level grades for a Actuarial schools in UK:
‘At least two A levels/three H grades, and three GCSEs/S grades (A-C/1-3) including English. One of the A levels should be maths at grade A or B, while one other A level must be at least at grade C’

Hope that helps.
so the information u guys sent was great help. Thanks. But a few more questiions…
Mr. Arfeen, of the minimum requirements for Uk u mentioned, i have accopmplised the GCE requirements and hope to do the same at A level. What bothers me is that the requirement is too low. If this field is rated as high as Ms Aziz says, then why is da requirment so low???
I have been doing sum resaerch of my own and this is what i found out at State LIfe(Karachi):
State Life’s Actuarial Training Scheme State Life has a program for recruiting freshly qualified intermediate (pre-engineering) and A-level candidates as ‘Actuarial Trainees’. Based upon its requirements and vacancies available, State Life invites applications by advertising in all the leading daily news papers of the country. The criteria and procedure for selection is mentioned in the advertisement, which is strictly followed.
Based upon the progress of the actuarial students, they are promoted to higher grades. The Society of Actuaries USA and Institute of Actuaries, UK, both conduct examinations in Pakistan through their representatives. For examinations of both the professional bodies, the student has to put in personal efforts to pass the examinations through self-study.
Process of registration for the examinations of both the professional bodies is simple and every student has to register on his own. Admission to the UK Institute as a Student member is not automatic and the candidate needs to apply for the membership of the institute. Both these bodies offer discounts to the students of developing countries. You may write to these bodies in order to obtain discounts.
Questions:
1) Does that mean that i register with them immediately after A levels?
2) A self study approach. So there wld b no helping hand?
3) Which to choose: UK or US??
4) Do i join them as an employee??
Thnx u all people for givin dis much response and helping us.

furthermore i want someone to recommend a good a levels school in karachi.
As University Of Karachi is Offering BS in acturial sciences morning and evening, this is 4 years program, and afetr completion of this degree, 4 papers are exempted of Societies of Acrurians, this program is really good for Joining the SOA after completion of it.

my question is specifically from sidrah :
is it worth doing actuarial sciences from KU ?
Actuarial Science is not required to be an Actuary, you can do BBA, Finance & Accounting, Mathematics etc. Well, if you wanna do Actuarial Science in Pakistan then Institute of Business Management(IoBM/CBM) is better.
Hello everyone,
My name is Intisar and I am an Actuarial Science major at Drake University in U.S. I see a lot of questions here are asking the same thing. My simple suggestion for you is this. As long as you have Mathematics as your subject, and you are VERY good at it, then Actuarial Science is a career always open for you. Becoming an actuary requires passing exams. University degrees that you hear of are not be confused with. They help you take courses which cover most of the exam curriculum.
If you apply in U.K, some universities have high standards and expect at least 3 A’s in A levels, and a MUST A in Maths.. (Further Maths is highly desirable)
For U.S, you just have to gain admission to a University. They dont admit you on basis of your achievements in a particular area or subject. If you get admitted and asked for a desired major then you can select and start off with Actuarial Science.
It is a very very hard field of study. The drop out rate is very high, and the best advice I can give you is that before entering in this path DO meet an Actuary and it is highly desirable that you take up an internship alongside an Actuary.
Research is always the biggest help.
Visit http://www.beanactuary.com and 90% of your questions will be answered.
I would say it again, for all those interested in this major and those wishing to go into depth of it, visit http://www.beanactuary.com since it has everything you need to know.
Hello Mr.Intisar,
Thanks for the link, it was very helpful.:)
Hello maddy mad.
i have a friend who is a visiting faculty member of KU actuarial science department. He told me its better not to do actuarial sciences from KU, instead check out the BSc in mathematics and economics being offered by the LSE international program.
