Hi
I would like to clear my confusion about the duration of Masters as same universities offers one year as well as two years Master program (of course the degree name would not be same) but I don’t understand the difference, I mean what impact doing one year degree make in ones career.
I have seen so many professionals who were never asked in their interview about their MS duration.
I’m currently working at Motorola Inc.
Could any comment on this..
Thanks in advance.

Umair,
You are right. Employers usually don’t care about the duration of MS degrees. They usually try to find out if the candidate is right fit for the position being interviewed for.
From a jobseekers’s perspective, there are pros and cons for going for 1 year or 2 year Masters program.
1) 2 year masters program allow you to take wide variety of courses. In USA, you can usually take around 12 courses which gives you an opportunity to learn more about your field. Whereas 1 year program is very focused. Usually degrees like Masters in Finance, Marketing etc have one year program as they revolves around concepts of one major subject. Usually degrees in US are of two years and the ones in UK are of 1 year. From an employers perspective, I don’t think that they care if you have a 1 year or 2 year MS degree.
2) 1 year of MS degree allows you to come back to corporate world soon and start earning as compared to a 2 year MS program. However 1 year of MS degrees are usually expensive than 2 year MS degrees and one has to pay the fees in less amount of time.
Let me know if you have any specific questions.
Thanks,
Mariam
Thank Mariam for your comments, and I agree with you that If some one wish to have Master degree and like to come back to corporate world soon, for him one year degree is enough but this of course donot apply for all technical fields. for example there are some fields that have many international certifications like computer networks where I belongs to.
so one can pursue with one year master and a couple of certification in order to have satisfactory career.
Umair,
You are right. However what mariam said is true in general and may not be applicable to all degrees. I believe her reply answer your main query which is that employers usually don’t care if you have a 1 year or 2 years MS degree.
What options do you have? What are you planning to do? Let me know if we can be of any help.

What I have found from my experience aligns with Mariam and Younas.
Employers generally do not care about what courses you took and your degree duration. I have yet to hear about anyone who has been asked/critiqued on his/her MS degree duration.
It is true that in 2 years you get more exposure, but what I have personally learned is that it does not matter that much. What companies want from you is dedication and ability to learn. Thats all!
All the best!
after having a look at all the comments .. i believe no one is thinking what if a person with 1 yr M.S degree wants to join a government sector. There , you have to have 2 yr M.S 2 be a part of it… as is the case with India
Is the duration of MS program in US 2 years or 3 years? If 2 years then why is it mentioned 3years on I-20 ??
the duration of MS course in us is 1 year or 2 years..?
i agree with above comments. I have not heard about duration of masters questions while job interviews, nor have ever gave credit to any one during job interviews. It only matter of expertise you will get during that extra year. Mostly it is prob couple of more courses and lot more reseaerch work that you may get during 2 year degree, while in 1 yr degree you would have least research. so if you have to go back to coorporate job sector, i think you wont be gaining any direct materialistic thing while having 2 yr degree.
yes i have heard the immigration criterias do ask about duration of masters and give you extra points for 2 yr degree
I readily agree wit all above that the duration hardly matters. I would like to ask what is the total duration which is required to complete a masters and a Phd program together from a US university. Is there a provision for 1+2 years 2 complete the same?
Please suggest me on this ….
