Fulbright 2009 Scholarships
Does anybody know, how many fulbright scolarships are being offered for 2009 program? I can find out such notifications for previous years, where sometime the US ambassadar would announce the number of scholarships for the year, but havent really been able to find out for this year. Any one with a deeper insight?
Related posts:
the exact number is usually not known till the end (as few people end up not availing the opportunity, some has visa problems etc) but usually the number is 125+
in 2008 it was more than 200, in 2007 it was around 150 and in 2006 it was around 125.
Thankyou Younas for the prompt reply. Actually i just wanted to clearify a rumour around, that the fixed quota for Pskistan students might no loonger be there. If this is true it would mean pk stds competing with international students and probably a significant drop in no of scholarhsips. Do you have an insight?
So far nothing like this has been confirmed/announced by HEC or USEFP so i don’t think that the quote will be dramatically reduced. i still expect 125+ scholarships to be awarded to pakistani students.
best of luck with your application.
Thanks Younas. i will share wiht you whenever i get some update on this.

900 ppl applied for 2009 fullbright…200 have been shortlisted for interview and final selection would depend on the amount of funds.(Interviews in september)
Are these some sort of official facts published and i did not hear anyone getting a call atleast till August. Does this mean that all calls would be made in september?
People who have gone for an interview in September have been given a printout which states that 900 individuals had applied for 2009 fullbright and only 200 have been shortlisted for the interview. The interviews will be finished by end September and incase someone does not receives a call in September, then they have not been shortlisted.
The final selectees will be notified by end Oct/ early Nov.
emails confirming acceptance for 2009 progrmas have been sent to the successful candidates.
I am the student of Honours. I am doing it in I.R. so can i apply for this and what is the procedure.
Go to http://www.usefpakistan.org and read about it.You will find a detailed sample application (for masters starting in 2009 )which is important to understand for
qualifying for F.bright scholarship.
hope this helps.

hi,\i am student pursuing a career from IBA, Karachi in business administration. I am enrolled i a four year programme, which means i,l be graduating in May 2010. I’d be grateful if anyone could inform me whether i can apply for the scholarship now? i.e i have currently not graduated, but will be garduating in 2010. am i eligible to apply for the 2010 programme? or it has to be 2011 programme?
thanks.
hi everyone,
i am doing my four-year BBA from IBA, karachi. just wanted to know about the fulbright scholarship policies for mba programs. i’l be graduating in 2011 though but i’l haf to start working on the criteria held by fulbright.
cn someone plz give me a general idea bout it
As you will not be able to apply before 2011, suggest you start preparing for TOEFL & GRE next year and take these tests by end of next year, as given the stiff competition for these scholarships a good score is a must. More imporantly need to distinusih your resume though participating in community work, welfars/NGO organization, cultural events, organizing college functions, etc. somthing which adds flavour to your resume and is different from your ‘competitors’ who will be applying for this scholoarship.
i have the same question as Mr. muzafar. am i eligible to apply for fall 2010 fulbright when i will be graduating in spring 2010???
It is upto Fullbright to decide whether to accept such an application or not. I know a person who submitted the application under these same circumstances and got the scholarship. Although during his interview Fulbright person said that they had erroreneoulsy called him for an interview but since he is there they conducted the inertview.
Anwar is right.
Thanks anwar for sharing the information.
thanks anwar for the help. one more thing. can u tell about the different universities they give us as an option and the amount of scholarship they offer?
Fulbright chose 4-5 universities themselves based on your academic background and the preferences you give to them. Scholarship depends on which city you end up going. Based on that particular city expenses – your monthly stipend can range anywhere from 1200 dollars to 1700 dollars per month.
and do u think these universities haf a 2-year work requirement for the mba degree?
Depends on the university, but work experience is preferred. Although a solid application including outstanding GMAT score/ good academic back ground and a CV which shows more than your standard info (i.e. someone who is active in community work, volunteering/internships in NGO’s, etc) will help in securing the admission. Moreover in MBA application an applicant is asked to write four essays. How imaginative, creative essays you write also have a strong bearing on your application. At the same time please note Fulbright is not very enthusiastic in awarding scholarships for MBA program especially to fresh graduates.

The deadline has passed.it was 18th may 2009.U shall try next year.By the way,has anybody got the interview call?I applied for the subject of oral biology.I had Gre score of 1190 and toefl ibt 113..everyting else was gud..but i didnt hear from them till now..i am apprehensive now..:(
Assalam-u-alaikum everyone.I want to apply for ACCA 2011 scholarship for my brother who is doing his “A” level. Please help me.
Thanks
i want to know that if someone get Fullbright scholarship for masters only, can he defer the same for 2 years.
hi,
i have applied for the fulbright this year for masters and have still not gottn any call for interviews. My GRE score was not very good but it did fulfill the fulbrights requirement which is 300 in each section. other than that my acedamic results and cv are good.
have everyone shortlisted so far been called for interviews?
till what time of the year are these interviews conducted?
does the fact that my GRE is not very good [800] i will not be called? does other things not count?
plz reply soon
thanx.
well it depends which subject did u apply for..if u applied for an enginering discipline or literature,a bad gre score ma obscure ur chances..if ur field was a bit different,u may have a chance..i got my call on 31st july and i have talked to people who took it few days back..i think they have mentioned june, july and august as da interviewing months…u shld keep ur fingers crossed..and pray to Allah..apparently they call on a 3 days notice..so dun loose hope
thankyou for the reply. my field is architecture. and what all do you have to take along for interview? what do they ask mainly? what is the lowest GRE score that you have heard of have gotten called?
Meeting minimum requirements doesn’t guarantee an interview nor getting the max score does it. However the better you score in each of the criteria i-e GRE, GPA, etc – the more you have chance of getting shortlisted. So pray to Allah and IA you might get lucky. In the past I have seen cases where even people with 800 GRE score has been called for interview.
In any case don’t just rely on Fulbright and keep your options open for other scholarships (hec etc) in US and in other countries.
and hey any idea how many applications were recieved this year and how many people have been shortlisted?
we were given the handout which stated that they have shortlisted 250 out 1050 people…
and how many will actually get the scholarship? do u need to take portfolio and stuff for interview?
yep since ur from architecture, having ur portfolio will help..well they ask u to bring ur original academic documents on da day..interview questions r typical at times but i felt a lil weird over da way they asked me..usually they assess the confidence level and communication skills along wid da relevance of the subject and bla bla..(cont)
i havent taken tofel as yet? i was told that you can also take it after interview? what is the deadline for that?
on da day of interview, they ask u to write an essay on a random topic..after that they question u,like i got the following questions:
1.what dis subject wud do for pakistan?
2.what was missing from ur qualification that u wud improve
3.what u ll learn from america apart from education
4.what u ll teach the americans abt paki culture
5.other random questions..
toefl isnt mandatory till da interview..after interview they ll send u da email telling u da available dates n stuff..no deadline is fixed as people r taking interview since june and wud continue to take it till august i suppose..so they cant have a single deadline..i was given august 30th deadline but i have already taken dat!
thank you so much for quick relys and for your help. now i just hope i get called, do pray for me. and btw if i take GRE again now will they consider my new result?
and u pray for me 2..:)
well i dun think so its gona help now..if u get the scholarship inshallah,u may consider retaking it for improving ur chances of getting into the university of ur choice..u may ask them directly, mail them they do respond within 2 3 days
Hello Everyone…….
Is there any restriction for minimum GPA to apply for Fulbright program……..Need Your inputs.
Regards
and sehar whats the detail on the 250 that’ve been shortlisted? Do they also include the PhD students or only the Masters applicants? i didnt get the handout ur talking about
Hi everybody,
I was shortlisted for Fulbright Scholarship. My interview was in first slot of the program. I was also given a print out in which it was written ” 380 applications received and 100 have been shortlisted for PhD”. Actually I applied for Master and they called me in PhD program. They asked if I applied for MS leading to PhD and they convert my program in MS leading to PhD. Interview was so so but I hope I’ll win the scholarship. I also showed them my admission letter. Please any one tell me what are the chances of getting scholarship. They also gave us one empty paper to write something on given topic. My yahoo email is raguelmoon.
|Thanks
Majority of the students who appeared with me are from Master program. They converted them into PhD and some MS leading to PhD while the other not. They give more weightage on your credentials. Your GP, GRE score ( specially specific section related to your field, my quantitative is 680 as I applied for Physics program), TOEFL ( not required for interview), statement of purpose, and employment are also considered for shortlisting the application. Please anybody share info about interview and admission process in USA.
wow dats sum new info..coz the usefp fulbright faq said that they have eliminated the programe for MS leading to phd..
Can I apply for a masters leading to PhD program?
No, this program is no longer available
Ref: http://www.usefpakistan.org/FulbrightFAQs.html
apparently they r not even sure of their own policies??
Dear Sehar,
According to FAQ, this program is no longer available but the they asked me about the program. This program is available this time.
Yes sehar you can apply for MS leading to PhD program. Did you apply or want to apply ? Do you know anybody who is doing master/phd on fulbright scholarship?
hmm dats good if they made this offer to u..they never said this to me..:)..well PHD rite after MS means alot and i wud ve gone for this if i knew abt this..but never mind may not be the best option for me..
yep i think i know a few people who took up dis plan.they are done with their masters and now either waiting for the renewal of visa or finding a phd supervisor..they r in process of working things out.
did you appeared in interview?
yep i did in july..when did u appear?
I’ve pretty much given up on Fullbright – are they still calling people for interviews? Has anyone heard from them in last few days? I had a pretty good GRE score and GPA, so I was hopeful
.
to sehar:
I also appeared in july 11th. please tell me your interview conditions. Which date? for MS or PhD? your score etc…plz join me in yahoo messnger: raguelmoon@yahoo.com
to amirali:
hay what is your field and GRE score and district of domicile. Did you submiitted SoP? are you from 16years or 18years education? what is your age?
hurry up man…
Well this is an interesting development. Now Ram u hv actually made the odds a bit worse for us by breaking that news. I thought that the MS to PhD was funded by the HEC and because Mr Zardari had drastically reduced HEC funding, that this program was no longer available.
Anyway its good for u that it is still being offered.
I just hope that the MS to PhD scholarships are a part of the 60 PhD grants and not of the 100 Masters ones
Amir they say that the interview process will continue in to september, im guessing till the 20th maybe. And they just call u just 3-4 days before the interview. So there’s still a lot of time
whats ur field of study btw?
yes your are right. last time they offered 186 scholarships to pakistani studnts.
To Ram C:
I’m originally from Karachi, but I’m in Lahore nowadays.I did a computer science and math double major, because my interest is in fields on the borderline of them, like discrete Geometry or Computer Vision. 17 years education, and a 1540 GRE score. Thanks for the info, Shehryar and RamC.
Wow! 1540 on the GRE is like lottery. Well done man. Why dont u apply independently because im sure u’ll be able to get funding anywhere with a 1540
oh good you have 1540 score out of 1600!!!! you must apply directly to the universities. you can get RA/TA much better than Fulbright. You can get more than 1500$ per month. I hope they must call you. Interview call for PhD program has ended this month, now they are calling for MS program, i think ( not sure). Which program you have selected : ms or phd?
what is your age?
Ram how do u know that the PhD interviews hv ended? You’re not friends with Rita Akhtar are you?
Actually they called PhD candidates in first slot. We were given handout in which it was written that 380 application received for PhD scholarships and 100 have been shortlisted. Who is Rita Akhtar? There were 3 girls with me but I dont know anyone…
lol@ da last post..
nehow..well i am applying for biological sciences..m a dentist by qualification.Present job and future plans are teaching to the undergrad students..had gre 1190..gpas,i am not sure for i am from the percentage system, but i ve been a position holder in the university and have achieved more than 70% in last 3 professionals(remember m not an engineer or mathematician):)
my interview was on 30th july.Rita akhtar is the programe manager for the fulbright pakistan. She was da chair of our interviewing panel.our handout also told us the names and da designation of the panel members..
How your interview remained? What is your domicile? did you apply for PhD or MS? what was written in handout for applications…. plz inform….
Shehryar,ur rite..now my hopes r lil low coz i ve the competition is way harder than wat i anticipated..:)
domicile doesnt matter i suppose, but i am from lahore.i applied for MS oral biology.
My interviewing experience was ok.On the day of interview they asked us to rite an essay on a person i wud like to go out on a dinner with and why.I stated my choice and narrated the reasons.
Our interviewing panel had a clinical psycologist(who really annoyed da hell outa me),Rita Akhtar,a retired professor from uni of texas, and a former fulbrighter.
during the interview the questions went like why we should select u for this scholarship, what gud wud it do to pakistan, why not public health(since i applied for something which really was new for them),what wud u learn from america apart from dentistry, wat wud u teach them bla bla..
I stated that i shall be selected for i am a dedicated and motivated individual and my project wud benefit pakistan and i am a responsible citizen so i cud serve da purpose of this scholarship.Reagrding the good to pakistan thing,i said that there is acute shortage of teachers for teaching of these subjects and bla bla bla..i also replied to a question that dentistry in pakistan lacks the orientation of research and stuff like dat..regarding learning from america,i said that i wud like to learn the secret of american harmony despite the diversity of culture races and religion and from pakistan,i wud like them to know the role of modern pakistani women in the society and change their concept of percieving pakistani women to be burqa clad and suppresed in homes…
the psychologist realy made me crazy wid questions like why didnt u apply for public health and u shld have gone for that and watever justification i gave,he wud come up wid sumin to negate it…i am really scared of his opinion..he was da only one apparently wid sum experience of medical sciences and his role was to deter me rather than KNOWINg abt the subject.nehow.,,i m also keeping my fingers crossed while working on da backup plan!!
good… hope you’ll success…
ram c,how was ur experience?
same questions were also asked with me. My interview was so-so. Let us see..They also asked about the university I selected. I also showed them admission letter of the university. After that fulbright lady asked to convert my program into MS leading to PhD. I said yes for the change. Let us see the luck….
do you have facebook? my facebook is raguelmoon@yahoo.com. We can share there…
I’m 24 – selected MS programs. Thanks a lot for the encouragement Ram C. I’m definitely going to apply independently, see if I can get in at any good places with funding. Things will work out eventually, hopefully. Thanks for the info about interview questions, sehar and good luck getting the scholarship. Cheers.
And thank you too, Shehryar. By the way, anyone who writes the essay there on the spot should be careful about writing anything controversial. One of my friends was given an essay to write on the blasphemy laws, and he spoke strongly in favour of them. The panel grilled him over that for ten minutes – didn’t go down too well.
Amir, for u i d say that u should mail the usefp urself. They generaly guide u well..so instead of making ne assumptions and guesses,u shld get in contact with them.ask them if all da candidates have been given the calls or how long will this interviewing process last..i hope things work out well for u inshallah..but agreed with every1 else,u have got excellent GRE score so u shld be eligible for other fundings sources as well..
hi all, thanks for sharing your individual experiences, im also interview awaiting, and this actually kept me holding from taking any other stuff at home/office..
anybody with an exact information till which date the interviews will be conducted?
regards
Hi everybody,
there are as many alternate cnadiates as principal candidates. if principal fails to get admision/visa then offer is given to alternate candidate.
Hay Amirali, did you get call for interview…?
Hey, Sehar, Ram, thank you for the advice. I haven’t gotten call from them yet, but I checked with them and they say they’ll be conducting the interviews till mid September, and they’ll announce results by first week of October.
Hi, can anyone please tell me about the fulbright interview updates like how many applicants, how many shortlisted (Phd and Masters) and upto which date should one expect the interview call for 2010 scholarships. I applied for Phd in social sciences and now its end of August, I am a bit apprenhsive.
100 masters and 60 phs for 2010
interviews from June till September
Notification October 2009
hi amirali, you didnt get your call yet? what they said abt your interview call?
Nothing yet. They told me they would be calling people till mid September, but pretty much everyone I know in my university has gotten a call already. Khair. It’s in the hands of Allah now.
hey
i am a student doing BBA.
i read all of the posts above and think
that you ppl know a lot abot fulbright.
plz someone tell me abot the GPA
requirement for fulbright. like i have
3.2 currently. would it be fine?
well they do reward academic excellence but there are certain other things which they look into. These include your personal statement and study objective. They look for the validity of your project and its benefit to Pakistan.Another important thing which havent been mentioned here so far is the participation in the extracurricular activities. They look for people who are interactive and active. So you should have some certificates related to the stuff like you could organize some conference or function and get a certificate or show them your involvement in the community by some volunteer work at some school or hospital or an organization like red crescent or national volunteer movement.Everyone compeeting for fulbright is excellent academically,so you can make ur stats stand out by showing them diversity.
Amir, you still have 15 days to wait. They call you 3 days before the interview so they must not have made calls to every1!!i hope things workout for you well!
hey, what all supporting doccuments did you people attached with the application? i only attached my acedamic transcripts.
@ saher’s post: i have been very active in extra cullicular activities and have a good portfolio of event organising and theater and social/volunteer work. i did mentioned selective projects in my CV but no certificates…does that matter not that anything can be done now…just anxious!!
what happens if you miss their call of something? do they call again? how do i check on that. im being paranoid thinking they prolly lost my number, or misread it or something crazy like that.
ok so if i hav a gpa of 3.2 and good extra curricular record then i can get it?
and i also wanted to ask what is the PROJECT which many ppl talk about in other posts as vel n how cn i make it relevant to pakistan and dis scholarship?
@ayesha..i cud understand dear..we all have gone thru da same procedure and feel da same way, even now when i konw the results wudnt be announced before october,i check my email 10 times a day and even on sundays..:)).its very natural i think,u shud Pray to God.they cant misplace your number and they make sure that they talk to the principal applicant even if they drop the message to someone else on da landline, they wud call again to locate the person.I did attatch my certificates of participation and organization of conferences and workshops in my fields and letter of appreciation.A copy wud have made ur application more authentic, but once again there is no single criteria for selection, they look into alot of other things.
@sehar post:
plz guide me i m a bba student and my gpa is 3.2 would it b fine? is it enough to get fulbrught scholarship.
well i m from a percentage system so unfortunately dun have much idea abt the gpa but 3.2 looks fine to me.U shld check individual university and programe requirements where u want to continue ur studies and try to get the GPA they require to get the placement u want.and i wud again say that many people wid same gpa wud compete for the same slot so u shall make ur application look more important than the rest.offcourse if ur aplying for finance or maths,ur gre score wud play a role,ur extracurricular participations and the relevence of the subject for pakistan. For ur project,u shud try to talk to seniors who already have recieved the grant or maybe ur professors who cud tell u where pakistan requires individuals wid da said qualification and than make it a point.GPA alone is not a guarantee for shortlisting but obviously the better u have wid other things,u ll ve more chances!
is it need based or merit based or both do u hav any idea abot it? and anything else u want to suggest to me as i m in my 3rd year of BBA so there is tym for preparation.
it is not need based for sure.Concentrate on ur gpa, participate and organize extracuricular and volunteer activity and get a certificate and identify what u want and why u want..must have a strong compelling reason to do watever it is!!
This link describes the programe policies and the a little bit of the final selection criteria.Might help you a bit!
http://fulbright.state.gov/fulbright/become/programwork/program-structure-and-rules/students-from-partner-countries
Read what they are looking for and than try to develop that quality in urself.
oh thanks a lot sehar can i have your contact like email or sumthing in case u wont come over here
drop ur email adress,i ll send u ma email
daniyal_shafiq@hotmail.com
they send both email and phone call for interview invitation. so plz check your email regularly if you fail to miss the call. i received both. my email script is :

I got a call yesterday for an interview on Sep 5th. I am in Karachi
There was no email.
There are more interviews to come after the 5th as well.
hay nice, have good luck. must update us with your interview. your are applying for ms or phd?
Note that my name was “MBA …”
does any one has any idea as to how many people have been called for interviews and how many are yet to be called?
Dear All,
Thank you all (especially RamC, Sehar, Daniyal etc) for helping each other with various questions and answers related to Fulbright Scholarship.
I know many Fulbright Alumni’s and know a lot about the scholarship. The key to getting the Fulbright Scholarship is to try your best to
1) Have great academic credentials
2) Have excellent GRE score (and GMAT whenever applicable for MBA students)
3) and the most important thing is to take your time to fill in Fulbright Application and write great Essays. (this is the key that distinguishes you from others)
In your Fulbright Application (Essays) you have to demonstrate how your education will help you bring in a change when you will come back to Pakistan. You will also have to demonstrate your ability that you truly reflect Pakistani culture in US and once you are back will share your US experience with Pakistani people. Remember its a cultural exchange program and that’s one of the key points.
In near future, pkstudent is planning to upload some of the Fulbright Essays of the past Alumnis who has been granted the scholarship at a very low cost. We will remove all the confidential information and will make sure that these essays are not used in a wrong way by the community. You should always write down your own essays. The idea will be to help people know how to reflect their thoughts in their application. Let me know guys what do you think about this idea and if we should do this or not?
Also, remember that there are 100s of other scholraships available in various other universities. So if you don’t get Fulbright its not end of life. If you have good academic record, you can always get funding from universities.
pkstudent management has experience from top universities. Do you think that we should start paid consulting by opening an office in Pakistan? I am sure we can provide 1000 times better service than all other consultants that are out there ripping poort students and sending them to third grade universities in UK/Australia/Sweden etc
Do let me know your thoughts.
Hay Mariam,
Nice idea. I agree with you. Let us start the program, it might help other students to get higher studies in USA.
cheers….
@mariam.
I would like to thanku for putting up dis forum. It feels good to share your experience and waiting with other people for the result.Helping students would be a good idea but do try to get as many volunteering services and counsellors online as possible.
@mariam and @sehar,
how to start forum? plz suggest some points…..
@mariam and sehar!
hay if you both selected for fulbright then must call me in your university on RA/TA, if i selected thn i wud do the same so that we cud create new forum…
hahahahahahahahaha
hay! do you know about merit number for fulbright scholarship. is interview call number is merit number? i learnt this from prevoius fulbrighter…
I have also now open a forum for pkstudent here
http://www.pkstudent.com/forum/
Here anyone can go and ask new questions and anyone can then answer it.
Looking forward for your feedback and your help in populating it with useful question and answers.
@RAMC
I have already completed my education from Oxford University and is currently working now
Hi all,
I read the posts and found hem very helpful and i think if i had consulted this blog a little earlier it would have helped my application alot.
For now i have applied for masters program and have still not gotten interview call from the fulbright.
My acedamic record and resume are good i think its just that my GRE score is not good. Is there anything i can do about it now?
Does antone knows about other scholarships? i checked on the universities that i want to go to and they dont offer funding for international students and the ones that do are very complicated as in you have to be there to find that. I really need the scholarship and its just Fulbright that i had applied for as i was a 100% i will get it…but nothing so far =(
Is there a way to check if i am in the list of fulbrighters for this year?
@mariam,
good, so what are doing now and where? which degree you got from oxford?
Hi guys,
i heard a roumer and id like a confirmation regarding it. a friend told me that the USEFP [fulbright] does not grant scholarship to applicants who have any family connection in the millitery. e.g. somebodys dad being an army personal will not be granted the scholarship…..can someone plz confirm it as this could apply to me as well and come to think of it iv never heard anyone getting it whos parent/parents is in army.
i hope its just a roumer though
is what J said right guys?? this could apply to me as well…..=(
hey guys,
has everyone suddenly stopped using this blog??
Hi, Can anyone please tell that when completing the online embark FB application do we have to upload transcripts and then provide all the supplemental forms. As we submitted these docs with the paper application , is there any need to do it again. Man, getting the ref letters from profs is a killer!
That’s a roumer. I know people who’s parents were in Army and Military and they were granted Fulbright Scholarships.
Hay all,
where are you, all? did you all get scholarships and leave the forum? please drop your comments and experiences about interview…..
@mariam, you didnt create forum!!!
please read here, students got MS leading to PhD Scholarships for Fulbright 2008:

Well there should be something that is in favour of the civilians u know. i mean the army guys rule this country every now and then…dont u think giving them scholarships would be too much?

hey guys i was wondering if u could help me with something…im still not sure whether the interview call number is merit number?! is it?
From what I know, it’s not related to merit number. Some people I know got it when they were called for interview near end; others got it when they were called near the start. It’s rather random. The only trend is that people from same field are more likely to be called on same day.
Oh ok. Thanks for clearing that Amir. Now i get what that means. Anyway, congratulations on the call!
hey guys,
congratulations to all those who have been called for the interview. and goodluck to all those who are still waiting including me. lets keep our fingers crossed theres still a week or so.
i heard they have increased funding so prolly are taking more people than before. does anyone know of exact number of applicants shortlisted this year?
Hi,
I am coming from out of town, and need help to minimize my costs
1) How long does it take to get to this address from ISL Airport. And what is the proper taxi rent (those yellow ones)
2) Also, is it better to keep the taxi during the interview. Or is easy to find a taxi to airport from that area?
3) How long is the interview once you arrive there? I have been called at 9:30am
waiting for interview call…….zZzZzZzz
1. Depending on the traffic it could take 25 to 45 minutes. Rent for the radio/white cab is approx. Rs Rs 400/- to Rs 450/-
2. Donot keep the taxi as taxis are easily available outside the USEFP office.
3. Everyone on that date is called at aorund the same time i.e. 9:00AM to 9:30AM. But the actual turn can take several hours. I know someone who was called for interview at 9:30AM and his turnactually came at around 4:00PM.
To AMIRALI:
Amir ali i want to contact you on your email
my email address is daniyal_shafiq@hotmail.com so plz email your adress on this email adress. I want to ask few specific questions from you.
amir sorry i wsnt able to reply to you at dat tym
bcoz of electricity
dnt u hav hotmail id so dat v can chat on msn?
are people still being called? has anyone gotten a call in the last few days?
i guess no.. this is probably going to be the last week
haven’t got the call too
, lets see what happens
Hey, I just received the call for interview.. I had actually given up on it.. My interview is tomorrow, 11th Sept (I asked the person who called from USEFP if he could give me a more ominous date! he didn’t get the joke)
Waqas – is this for Phd or MS?
for MS!
I had my interview on 8 Sep. there are 130 called for Phd interviews this year. Interviews will end on 17 Sep. Good Luck to all.
but i was given a handout which shows that they have called 100 for phd inteview out of 380.
@ waqas , yaar to which field have u applied for ur MS.
@ahsen I have just returned from the interview.. I had applied for journalism.. Actually I have an undergraduate degree in Engineering and I was trying to get a switch in my majors.. The committee was, for the most part, harmless and interested in finding out why I wanted to switch and how could I justify their funding.. I think I failed to impress them!
The guy after me was going for a philosophy majors and he had a background in philosophy, I think he’ll get the scholarship
lol even i feel da same that the guy and the girl going before and after me wud get it and i wont make it despite having the similar study objective and background..:p..well not too long before we get the result!!!
lol well I was the first one to give the interview today and the committee was quite cheerfula about it! anyway, the result would be somewhere in the second week of Oct., right?? Rita said something about it but I can’t remember…
*cheerful
are u guys sure of the interviews till 17th?
well, the interviews are supposed to go on till mid September and I think next week will be the last coz after that there are Eid holidays and they have to compile and release the result by mid October…
btw Have you guys registered for TOEFL?
i think they ask you to register for it when u clear the interview, they inform you well before time and also suggest u dates and schedules… may be 10 days before..
going for in advance would be a little of a risk.. waste of money rather
before the interviews, the USEFP folks told us that we should take the TOEFL exam as soon as possible, that’s why I was asking!
they wud contact u soon with the available toefl dates and centers.I think they wud and SHUD announce the result in da 1st week of october! This is wat i remember from my correspondence with them..its been such a long time now..:(
i went on their website and there’s only one suitable date in September and there are four in October, but october seems a little late, don’t you think??
yep it is indeed.i think they r gona push u for this september one if the results r due in early october or they mite offer u the october’s earliest date if they can spare u some time..in anycase,u ll get an email by next week which wud tell u the available dates and centers.so keep ur fingers crossed!
*fingers crossed* thanks.. hey, the minimum required score is 90, but how much is it out of? what’re the maximum points??
120 for toefl ibt which is da only option here in pakistan.u can get as much as u want:)
yes, I checked.. 30 for each section.. let’s see what happens!
i see.. all the best guys..
@ waqas u should not worry abt the toefl u can easily get more than 90 InshALLAH. You wud find it quite easy after been given the GRE. by the way I have given both , the gre n the TOEFL , but still waitin for the interview lol
but i am more worried abt the other guy who got 1540 in his gre , has he got the call yet
don’t worry.. I hope that you get the interview call.. and even if you don’t, there are extra marks for retrying next year.. yeah he has had his interview on the 9th…
Hey guys, thanks for the encouragement, especially Ram and Sehar. At my interview, they told me I should switch to P.hD application.
Like Sehar and Waqas, I got intimidated by one or two of the other candidates – it’s pretty competitive. The guy with me on my day had ten years of research experience, several publications, international conferences, and what not. They’re still calling people for a few more days – everyone should give the Toeffl asap. There’s a date on the 20th – don’t wait for them to email you the list, you can find the list of dates and centers on the website.
@amir.
dun worry. They have a policy of promoting younger lot.So even if ur not as experienced as ur competitors,u have a chance as long as u impressed them with ur determination and motivation.plus with a gre score and gpa like urs,i dun think they ll have much issues wid ur selection.best of luck
ps.they asked u to switch u to phd application?do u have 18 year of study time or wat?i am confused please explain this
I have 17 years education- did a 5 year double major B.Sc in Math and Computer Science. And thanks again for the buck up, sehar. I’m very optimistic you’ll get it – you impressed them with your extracurricular activities, workshops and seminar certificates. Let’s see how it turns out… I guess all of us just need to pray now.
@ amirali as miss sehar said with the gre score u have I am sure u will get through INSHALLAH . n i have heard that they prefer fresh graduates .
@ waqas “there are extra marks for retrying” kion???how? :S
still havent gotten called for interview =(
Hay becoming fulbrighets!!!
please post your GPA and GRE section score: My GPA is 3.6/4 and quantitative GRE is 680
@ahsen A senior alumna from my university went on the fulbright some years back.. She is currently a part of the team, which does some initial shortlisting of engineering students’ applications at usefp.. She told me that if a candidate re-applies next year, there are extra marks for that..
@Ram C …My GPA is 3.89/4 and my quantitative GRE is 760, but I’m changing my field of study entirely (please don’t ask why?
)
It’s been great talking to all of you here.. hope we see each other in the US!
@ waqas thanks 4 the info yaar
no problem, ahsen… I have a question for people who have registered for (or taken) the TOEFL exam. Is it better to register online or register from the prometric test center here in Islamabad. I tried to make a profile to register online but it gave an error of “Invalid International ID” in the passport information field. Is there a way around it? :s
@ waqas , yaar I rigistered myself from prometric test centre n found it quite convinent n safe . but I have ample of tym left for the test . So u better ask them how long they will take for the whole pocess.
why this page takes ages to open ?:S
well maybe the number of posts increased the size of the page or maybe its being viewed by alot of people..it wasnt that bad initially!
hmm probably , well it took me 15:17 minutes to reply this particular message
I called usefp islambad ,they said u have to wait till the end of this months . so is it 17th or 30th :S
thats good newz ahsan …… good luck
@ saad which 1 u r talking abt ?? n have u seen the cgpa n the gre scores of the people out there
haha we have a tough competition beta
chal we will apply next tym too
plz anobody who have been interviewed plz share with us…
Does anybody know what are the criteria for shortlist and final selection. GRE & TOEFL are not consider for selection. GPA, age and service is consider…plz anybody knows further…
@ahsan, did you get call for interview?
@Sehar, will they send email or call for selection?
the faq says that they wud call the people nominated as finalist or alternate and email those rejected..but anything is possible..they cant call 200 people at the same time so they may send an email and compliment it with a call later!
@ ram c, no i havent got it yet
repeating ahsen’s question. interviews till sep 17 or 30?
even i havent gottn called although i was told girls have more chance but anyways…Ahsen wats ur GRE score?
@ J yaar i got 1120 , 620 in quant only n 500 in verbal
whats urs?
I think they would definitely call the people selected and email those who are rejected..
@Ram C …from the inside scoop that I have, they have marks for itsy bitsy things in the application that you submit. For example, they have 3 marks just for if you mention in your essay that you would like to experience the diverse American culture and intermingle with the goras!
Rest they have marks for other things like this but I don’t have the details..
preety much obvious..fulbright is basically the cultural exchange programe and academic partcipation isnt the first thing to do although it is the main reason.that is why they at times prefer people wid average academic records over brilliant students..but tell ya wat,it sounds like a mystery..i mean u never know what may appeal to them.I have read an article on a previous fulbrighter from pakistan where Grace Clark, the then chair of the selection commitee said about his selection, that his study objectives were not as polished as his competitors but they still knew he wud represent pakistan well so they selected em.I tink it was Mr.usmani who is also a consultant at dis forum!
@j
i also had the same concept that they wud maintain the gender ratio altho it seems that so far they havent considered it.Like in my interview there were only 4 or 5 females and rest of them were guys.I duno about other’s observation.Comment any1???wat did u notice about the girls and the guys ratio on the interview dates?
@ waqar u seem to have prety useful information;) n more importantly thanks for sharing it so benevolently
this ratio thing is making me more hopless
Hi. Interviews will end on 17 Sep. There is a rumor of gender ratio……during my interview there only 4 women candidates. Yes, they definitely call and talk to selected candidates and later send email confirmations.
don’t know about the gender ratio.. There were 6 female candidates in the total 14 that I counted on the day of my interview.. that’s pretty even, no?
@ahsen.. no problem, mate.. it was no good to me as I got this information almost a month after the application deadline!
hmmm.. 17th is thursday.. so its only today or may be tomrrow for those who haven’t been called..
sad sad sad …:(
all the best to all of u guys..
@ waqas but jo bhi hai u got the interveiw call n U will get the scholarship InSHALLAH
called the fulbright office today. they say its an ongoing process, will go on till the end of sep. and people who dont get called for interviews will be sent a regret letter giving some what a reson as to why they cunt make it to the interviews.
still keeping my fingers crosse.
and ahsen my GRE wasnt good…950. but it meets their requirement so i still have my hopes high. i hope they take the CV seriously, coz i have mentioned all my publications,, work experience, extracurricular, social and volunteer assocciations… wonder if that helps.
@ J well they said the same thing to me too, well I am hoping u n I too wud get a call soon INSHALLAH .
@ J , yar did they say any exact date, i will be going out of station, don’t know if i shud cancel that or still stick with USEFP for few more days.. what field have u applied for, and what was ur respective scores on gre.. which univ have done bs/ms from?
they should have sent emails to people who haven’t been shortlisted.. what do u say..?
I’m relieved to know they’re still conducting interviews! I thought it was all over and was searching for other scholarships when I stumbled upon this page.
I was selected as a Fulbright Alternate Candidate (It’s like being a on a waiting list) last year but I eventually didn’t get the scholarship. I even received an enrollment letter to one of the colleges I has applied to along with a 6500$ scholarship (which was far too less). The Fulbright people encouraged me to re-apply, which I did… But I haven’t hear from them since then.
It’s been an excruciatingly long wait, I hope it’s worth it Inshallah! Best of luck to all of us!
@Maria!
Nice, you were an alternate candidate last year bt what was the reason of refusal. please post your reply to following questions:
what is your field?
what is your education: 16 or 18y?
to which program you applied?
your age?
your GPA?
your GRE score?
plz relpy i can evaluate your application. I think they’ll not call you in interview but select you as principal candidate this time…
@maria,
what are your doing now? did you apply this time or not? dont waste your time and apply for RA/TA. I am sure you’ll get RA/TA.
Their reason for refusal was that they did not have enough grants. I got a letter this April saying so. up till that point I was sending in all required documents just like the principal candidates were.
what is your field? Arts (Animation)
what is your education: 16 or 18y? 16y
to which program you applied? Masters
your age? 25
your GPA? I don’t know, had a percentage system. However I graduated with honours.
your GRE score? 840 (horrible, I know, but my field is mostly practical based so I don’t think the marks mattered that much)
I was wondering about this… can they actually skip the interview? Has it happened before? how sure are you bbout this? What do they usually do about Alternate candidates who re-apply?
I’d like some more information about this RA/TA business.
Thanks!
Yes maria they can skip the interview. You must wait. From which university you did your BSC(Hons)? And what is %tage? You can easily get RA/TA from US universities. Just search your interested universities and email your interests to your becoming supervisors, they will make contact with you. You must have statement of purpose(SoP). SoP carries largest weightage for RA/TA and Fulbright application. I can send you some successful SoPs if you dont have…
Did anyone get interview call today? 17th is going to be last day!!!
today is 16th n I think that is it .
Didnt they say that the interviews will continue till end september??
@ seher yes they said it but … . but some of the guys back here in this thread said that it is 17th :S
What’s the deal with 17th being the last date? Do u guys hv some official document that says that or are u just guessing or something?
@ shehriyar some one has posted here that 17th is the ;ast date, no not official. officially they are sayin that u have to wait till the end of this month
Hi folks, had my interview last week, can someone tell me what is the weightage of the personal statement? Who reads and assesses all the documents? What can be the reasons for a person to be rejected after the interview?
Someone please enlighten me on this ?
17 Sep is the last day of interviews as i confirmed it from usefp at the end of my interview.
@Snow White
The exact weightage of the personal statement hasn’t been made public by Fulbright or USEFP. I’ve heard that the personal statement, study objectives and the additional information, all taken together make up 1/3rd of the total marks, but this is just hearsay.. There’s a team of professionals which reads and assesses the documents, usually they have volunteer specialists from major fields who are actually capable of grading the essays. Well, the most striking reason for a person to be rejected after the interview is if she fails to impress the panel and doesn’t come up to their expectations. This has to be taken relatively (with reference to other shortlisted candidates)
Thank you, I thought so. When was your interview? What area and level have you applied for? I have applied for the Phd Program, and educationis my area.
No problem… My interview was on the 11th of Septemeber… I have applied for Masters in Journalism..
Anyone interviewed on the 10th for the Phd program? How did it go?
Hay folks, do you know the first day of interview? My interview was on 11th July…
I think interviews started in June!
Hi ,
wish all happy Eid.
Plz anybody share interviews. Did interviewer asked you: ” Do you have any question with us?”
Yes, in the end I was asked if I wanted to ask a question. But all in all I thought that the interview was quite simple, they didnt ask me any technical question. How did yours go?
eid mubarak to all of u.and ramchand, this is one of the standard question to be asked to every1 appearing in the interview.
Eid Mubarak to you SEHAR, and all. Interview was really simple. I don’t know how they will evaluate the application. Did any one get interview call after EID holidays….?
eid holidays are still not over.
thanks a bunch all of you guys, for all the really useful info shared. I’m still waiting for the call too and hadn’t been able to find any info until this morning wen i thankfully bumped into this page, n i really hope its not too late already. Do we have any engineering applicants here? Are they thru with their interview? keeping my fingers crossed, n wishing evry1 all the very best. may Allah be with us all..
@ rida Amen, i have’nt heard much from the engineering apllicants too of late in this thread. I am also waiting for my call .
did n e 1 get an interview call after eid?
@Ram C
I did my BFA from The National College of arts Lahore. My percentage was 78%.
So are the interviews officially over :/.
thank you ahsen.
anyone? heard nethin?
hopes are going down every hour. but i guess we can hold on to it till the end of September at least, last year when the last date to apply was mid may, interviews were still being carried out till the end of Sept.
@Maria
I think you got admi in US college which is not under Fulbright Ranking. Plz look your college in the list at Fulbright’s website.
hey,
did any one got interview call after eid? are they still calling people?
Realistically speaking , I doubt they’ll be calling anyone anymore. There is hardly any time left before they announce the final results. I didnt get a call either, next time inshAllah.
Hay, anybody here to know about the result…????
inshaAllah..Allah knows and does better
..
Ram i got a call from them on monday and an e-mail yesterday. It said that they would be e-mailing all the final candidates on tuesday. So if u dont get one, then its bad news im afraid
@Shehryar
what did they on call? did you selected for finalist?
@Shehryar
When was your interview?
plz post the email….
so when do you suppose the confirmations will start coming in? Best of luck to all!
Ram…i got a call on monday from isb. And sorry, i cant post the e-mail, its confidential
anyone here who received call as finalist…
I am Engineering Candidate, anyone from Engineering stream who has received call
@zee: are you through with the interview?
@Maria, did you receive call? and anybody from this stream received call? I didnt receive call but I got addmission in UMass with full RA/TA of amount $1600 per month plus tuition waiver for spring semester.
but I’ll wait for Fulbright call. I learnt that they will call in the mid of this month.
I appeared for interview in July
Mr. Ram u are admitted in U of Massa at Amherest or else where
@ZEE
elsewhere. I am waiting for fulbright i will avail fulbright scholarship instead. i rejected that offer of RA/TA.
@shehryar,
You didnt receive any call from USEF…hahaha
@RC
are u sure that no one has been called yet as Finalist
@Zee, yes zee, plz confirm from USEF office by calling…
Thanks
Hopes were going down every hour, When they are going to announce
@Zee @Ram, I dont know, plz ask from office…
@SR
When you appeared for interview, are u from Engg stream
I appeared in august, i m from basic science… do u know abt results… how did shehryar receive call?
One of my friend has recived email from usefp in september that Finalist will be notified in the first week of October.
@SR
What was ur GPA and GRE
who told you? Ram or else?
else
so first week is running.. when do u expect?
Hay Maria! did u get call? anybody in this thread got call for final selection.. Shehryar told that he had got one but he was lying…hahahahah
@ all, i request 2 all that please share those news n updates which has any credibility
Ahsan u are right, it is against the decorum of this Forum to spread rumers, but some times one has to conceal the identity of the person. About Shehryar I belive this act was really reprimendible, a Fulbrighter to be should not do it.
@Zee, yes dear you r right…
Today I called USEFP they say that u have to wait till 15 of October for Results.
So, I hope there is some time and hope remaining. I pray that some of our friends who has received call may have a real one this time.
hey..first of all,i dun think that anyone has to loose hope..its a competition and definately not the last option. We tried and did our best, now the results are upto God and USEFP.Best of luck to every1 i guess the delay is what is bothering most of us.
I wanted to ask about the final selection of the candidates, like what we get to know now wud be the recommendation of the selection committee to the FSB in washington. So how long does the final decision take?I hope what i am thinking is right,or maybe someone could correct me
True its upto Allah Almighty, FSB rarely rejects any recommendations by usefp, after that the selected candidates are to provide docs like original transcripts, original aptitude test scores etc. Then FB asks for university preferences and starts applying on our behalf. This is a quick process and universities accept or reject without delay. Once accepted other activities like passport/visa start alongwith FB orientatiion. Best of Luck.
Seats vacated by the candidates rejected / not admitted by the universities are offered to alternate applicants.
visa application includes doc like, medical history form, family info form, etc
@Zee, when will USEF announce result and how will they announce? I mean by email or by call and what will write to us…?? thanks
Ram, what is RA/TA? and how do you apply and qualify for that?
I got RA/TA for Fall Semester but didnt accept the offer coz i want to avail Fulbright… it is easy..you must have GRE, TOEFL and GPA in order to get the one. Just make contact with the your desired supervisor..
supervisor is only person who recommends you for RA/TA.
in RA/TA you can get monthly stipend plus full tuition waiver.. it just approximately equal to Fulbright Scholarship except medical and VISA process. You can get VISA easily with the help of USEF.
in Fulbright you can get stipend of $1200 to $1700 and same from RA/TA and even larger amount up to $2500 if your supervisor has projects. In RA/TA you have F-1 VISA while for Fulbright you have H-1 VISA. You cant work part time if you H-1 visa. With F-1 VISA, you can work there so can get extra money apart from RA/TA. Usually you get TA first if you apply for MS program and RA if you apply for PhD program. TA means teaching assistanship and RA means research assistanship. In TA your duties will be to help undergrad students for lab work, assessment of papers to look after Lab or related work. If you take undergrad class then they will pay more.
kindly correct me if i am wrong but Fulbright DOES NOT offer the H1 visa rather the exchange student/scholar J1 visa. The main feature of the J1 visa is the restriction to spend 2 years in the home country after the completion of your term.RA/TA in my opinion is a better option for those who get the chance to get that as you will be on F1 visa and will have the option to convert to H1 status if u get a job offer after you graduate. With fulbright those who get funding only for the graduate programe, they cant even extend the stay if they get an excellent offer from PHD.
I didnt get an offer for RA/TA ship despite of having a good TOEFL,GRE and GPA and a very strong personal statement. It varies from department to department and institution to institution. However if one can complete the 1st year of graduate study, they usually DO get the RA/TA ship offer.
FB gives J1 visa not H1.No work allowed on J1 visa by FB.
@Sehar, yes you are right, sorry, it is J1 VISA.
The teaching assistantship is a realy interesting job.All you have to do is to assist the professor with the undergraduate class. They dont realy tell u to deliver the lectures, but marking papers, preparing handouts and organizing group discussion and conductiong tutorials are the main tasks.Research assistanships are also great. They add to the research experience section of the CV and gets you a gud stipend at the same time.A research assistand helps the actualy researcher(Usually a PHD student) in organizing and analyzing the data and maybe doing some literature review for the projects. Both of the jobs are interesting. They require you to work for a certain number of hours per week(usually 20)..anybody who gets this chance, must avail it!
@Sehar, oh really i missed the chance. I’ll try again if i fail to get the Fulbright. I was afraid of not getting VISA on RA/TA basis..
@ram..i duno about u,but if i had the option,i wud have availed that. For the visa,u need to provide them with the prof of ur financial stability and this is where the offer wud have come handy that u will have this much stipend and fee waiver.but since u have a gud chance of geting the fulbright, and dat too MS leading to PHD,i think only the staying in the home country is the only condition not in ur favor otherwise ur gud
Can anyone tell me if they tell you reasons for rejection, if there is rejection that is? And J1 visa, doesnt it also mean that your spouse and your dependent can also accompany you? Kindly reply anyone!
I appeared for interview on 6th Auguest…but not recived any decline email or offer letter yet.
No reasons are given for rejection.
Yes spouse/dependent are granted J2 visa, but as per FB rules they travel to US after about first semester so as to give necessary adjustment time to the principal candidate.
Where is shehryar?
In Lahore
watsup?
did you send docs to USEF as you are selected for the program.
Dude i was joking..i think everyone pretty much knows that by now.
khair good luck to u. another one of our active forum members really wishes u the best of luck too
I belive he has not,
@Ram
u have really missed the offer of TA/RA, since it pays u more then Fulbright e.g Fulbright for UT Austin were paid 1200 USD where as average TA amount is 1700. There is also no bond, and prospect of staying there for Post Doctorate and Jabs
@shahryar. You really made me afraid.
@Zee, really, I missed the chance now what can I do?
@Ram
Whats ur GRE Score and GPA
GPA is ~3.8/4 and GRE score is confidential.
@Ram
Ram C You have been asking everyone their scores and have even asked their backgrounds and everything… how come your GRE score is “confidential” now? Whats your educational backgroundi.e. university and which field did you apply for ? Its only fair you share these details since you have been adamant about asking others their “confidential” information…
Chill out. Doesn’t really matter…..besides, he already mentioned his GRE quantitative is 680 higher up in the thread.
@amirali
I know … at the end of the day it actually doesnt really matter … was just an observation..
Hay, yes it is 680 on quantitative but whole it is confidential. You must show your that score which is considered for your field.
cheers…
Its alright… Gluck with your apps
I have met two previous Fulbrighter they say that any one who has Q 800 or Verbal 600 is good chance of being selected.
I met 6 Fulbrighters (for year 2008 and 2009) who have 800 GRE score or less (sum of Q+V). GRE score is not the criteria for selection, only GPA and educational background and objectives (your statement of purpose). GRE and TOEFL are requirements of US universities in which you want to get admission.
If one has 800 GRE in Q then he must apply for Harvard, MIT, CIT, UCal Berkley etc to get RA/TA of around $2000-3000.
Hello all,
I was called for the interviews for students seeking either Masters or PhDs through Fulbright/USAID. Has anyone been notified of the final selection yet? Their site says that you will be notified in October.
Does anyone use this forum anymore?
hello,
I Want to apply for fulbright undergraduate non-degree program (which for 1-2 semester(s), for next year fall semester(aug/sep 2010), can someone plz tell me the detailed proceedure for applying in the respective program.
Plz if someone have any info, tell me, cuz I have asked several ppl but none of them can be able to give some apporpriate information.
I hope I will get some valuable insights from this forum .
@sofia, i think there is no undergrad Fulbright scholarship, only MS, PhD, Postdoc and other non-degree scholarships are offered by Fulbright (visit: http://www.usefpakistan.org or http://www.usaid.gov/pk/ for further detail). Howsoever, if you have passed SAT and GRE then you can get scholarships directly from US universities and it is easy.
Cheers
As far as I know there is no such scheme as Fulbright Undergraduate Scholarship.
@Sofia, sorry no GRE but TOEFL….
@Sofia: There is indeed a Fullbright undergrad transfer program for short stay in US university. 12 people from my batch at LUMS went for it. It’s not as well known as the MS or PhD scholarships which is probably why the other people here haven’t heard of it.
However, a friend who received this opportunity was rejected by Fullbright this year when he applied for the MS scholarship. They told him on phone that after receiving one Fullbright funded scholarship, you cannot receive another for three years. So do think carefully before pursuing such option. If I run into my friend next day or two, I’ll try to get hold of the first hand information.
Cheers,
Amirali.
Oh good, this would be split undergrad program i think. If this is case then it means Fulbright offers split program too. Nice to hear this news, please post valuable infor about the program.
cheers..
I’ll ask my friend who went there about it tomorrow. It is only a semester or two though.
Thanx, Amir for ur prompt reply, plz let me know if u manage to get any info cuz i just have two years left of my BS program and i dont know how much time the proceedure will take for that program of fulbright, so i want to apply as soon as I can.
Thanx ones again.
It is NESA UGRAD program, the dead line has passed which was 9th Jan 2009. Next program will be announced in Nov-Dec 2009. You have to take TOEFL to avail this program. Your course will start in Fall of 2010 (probably in Dec). You can download the application forms from here : http://www.usefpakistan.org/documents/NESA.pdf
Cheers…
Has anyone heard from the USEFP regarding the final status of their Fulbright application?
not me, not yet.
@ Waqas: Same here. My interview went pretty well, I am just a little nervous because of the delay.
Actually I’m waiting for the rejection email more than the acceptance call!
@ waqas
hahahah
na bhai dont lose hope, i did the same thing by lossing hope n didnt even get an interview call
. so b + .
It’s not about losing hope, it’s about not hoping at all!
@ Waqas: You should get the call for your sense of humor
What did you apply for by the way?
thanks AP, I applied for stand-up comedy… err, no wait, it was Journalism.. very hard to distinguish between the two these days!
Man, if you and me get selected, count me in for a stand-up duet.
I applied for Engineering Management. Let’s hope for the best.
We have a deal then!
cool, I’m an engineering student too, btw
good luck!
who will deal with me if i selected…
@Ram: Nope, no call yet. They should have notified me if they weren’t planning on interviewing me again. I’m not feeling very hopeful and am so sick of waiting.
Then again, it would be pretty mean of them to outrightly reject a previous alternate candidate. Who knows? I bet they have this sadistic streak and are capable of it.
@Ram ..the US embassy!
Hey anyone got a call?
ok..so dis wait is now freakin me out..i wonder whats causing the delay..they shld come up wid watever it is..this phase of hanging in middle of nowhere is bad..
Hay friends,
You know that this the last batch of Fulbright scholarship in which USAID expects to send 1000 students from Pakistan for the year 2004-2009. See: http://www.usaid.gov/pk/sectors/education/ufs.html . New policy of Fulbright will be announced soon for coming years..
Relax people.. you’ve already waited for so long… what’s a few days more!!
Yes, Ram, I heard so too, but the USEFP guy at the USEFP seminar went too was also saying something about that maybe next year they’d increase the funding.. no confirmation on this though
Hey…can nybdy who has applied for fulbright or has got the scholarship give thr id to me? i jst need to knw the details. My id is zehra_zaif@yahoo.com
What? you want to hack our IDs??
go to http://www.usefpakistan.org/ for details!
@Zehar, plz visit the site, nobody can give you ID for hacking…hahahah
Jesus! Ram, now don’t be rude to the girl!
It’s zehra, not zehar *tries his best not to laugh* sorry zehra!!! On a more serious note, the best source of info on the scholarship itself that you can find is the USEFP website (link above) and the best source of info that you can find on everything else regarding the scholarship (including the interviews) is this thread.. so best of luck!
Oh Zehra, hahahaha. I have studied psychology. I can know about Zehra or Zehar..No girl can show her ID in the thread. Hay users be cautious.
when the hell will they name the final candidates… im dying here… aaaaAAaaaaa!
im tired of making friends with shadows on my wall…aaaaaAAaaaaa!
Hay neeraj, you seem to be new one to this thread. plz post your profile & where are you from?
Ram, stop being the stalker you!
You’re scaring away all the pretty ladies!!
@Waqas,
Sorry yaar…
Bad news people.. the isb office says tehy could drag this thing to the end of the month
happy waiting!
I don’t believe this news from shehryar…
@shehryar, sorry just kidding….
I called them 10 mins ago. And Ram, are u on this forum 24/7?
@Ram .. just kidding yaar, don’t be sorry please..!
what is 24/7?
shehryar is right. He called them infront of me..n i hate this!!!i guess its time to take other options seriously..enough with da waiting.
Yeah, shehryar is right this time. I just called them up too. They said they would be sending out intimations soon (refused to give a specific date) and said that they’ll contact everyone by end of the month.
lol.. this is Imperialist revenge! Sleep on it guys!
Last year the application deadline was around the end of April (28th?) and we got our confirmation e-mails on the 8th of October. I was so excited when I saw the e-mail, until I saw the word ‘Alternate Candidate’ in it and smelt something fishy…
@Maria, they send emails or calls to selected candidates…
Hm, well, happy waiting guys and gals.
Called them justnow
This will go on till the end of the month
We r screwed!!!
dheeraj rakho neeraj!
yes dheeraj rakho neeraj….
Neeraj is new in thread? Neeraj! which program have you applied for? MS or PhD? and which field?
neeraj ur not playing by the rules of this forum..anybody who posts here has to clear an interview with ram..only then we welcome them on board..n btw ram u didnt ask his gre score:p
i was also kidding btw!!!!
hahaha, plz post your GRE score as well, neeraj ji!!!
Is there anyone who has recived call, Time is running out I thinking of start applying as Funding opertunities will diminish later on.
Any one from Electrical Engineering who is applying.
How can we apply if they don’t advertise new program. Nobody in this thread has received called…
waiting yaar….
Salam all! I am also a Fulbright applicant. Been called for the interview. My major: Electronic Engg. Aiming to get into hardcore embedded designing. And dying to know the results. Good to know that nobody got an intimation. So now there is still some hope.
@Amirali: Are you the guy who participated in the IPhO and went to Korea to represent Pakistan back in 2003/2004? Do you remember your room-mate in the one-week encampment in Islamabad at PIEAS?
@Ram
I mean to apply directly to US Universities
Hey u all…
n yes, Mr. Ram your holiness, i bring glad tidings and hold nothing but utter respect for u… I hope u will pass me through the vigorous scrutiny test and allow me to be a part of this great forum…
I’m a fullbright applicant – MS program and waiting like crazy to hear from the HQ.
Anywhoooo, wanted to ask if you lot know anything about when the final candidates were contacted last year… a friend of mine got the phone call on the 15th but i read maria saying she got an e-mail on the 8th… so was just wondering if it actually is an ongoing process lasting the whole month of october…
Hey people! I have news! A friend of my colleague just got the fulbright scholarship! he had applied for MS in engineering.. I don’t have much details because I cannot probe about it at my work place but you guys should put your long ears out too and pray, pick something up!!
Really, when did he get call? Did he get call or email? and what did Fulbright folk tell him about further process…
hay, anybody did get call?????
well I don’t really know, my colleague just told me that his friend had called him about it today… I couldn’t get any more info except, that his GRE score was in the 1300s…
i spoke to one of my friend who is a FB alum and he has spoken to someone responsible at the USEFP.He told him that the emails will take about a week.We have to wait till tomorow to flood them wid our calls to know what exactly is going on.
@sehar, thanks.. we can still till week-end. It means that they’ll send emails not calls…
Hey guyz. I’am also a FulB applicant and had given the interview in August. My GRE score was 1300. I have applied for the Master’s program in Electrical Engineering.
I had called the USEFP today and they said that they’ll let us know by the 30th of the month.
@S
EE interviews were over in June I belive. What was the GRE average in ur lot
so… anythign new boyzis????
i called a couple of ppl but nothing as yet….
Anything new, Becoming Fulbrighters!!!!
Nope. Nothing yet. *sigh*
Any one on this forum is called
Ram where are u, any news
Yes dear, me here…didnt get any news, did u?
No news, did anyone get rejection mail yet
Hay, why? rejection email? you mean that final selection has been announced!!!! Please confirm from USEF….
Have u talked to USEFP Ram What they say
I didn’t talked. Please confirm from USEF yaar….
Ok I will Call, what do u think GRE 1300+ would have how much chance as is given above in forum
GRE 1300 score has bright chance yaar…
Its not just the GRE score. The whole application is considered in its entirety. That means GRE, interview, academic background, extra-curricular achievements, personal statement, study objectives, and ur future plans as reflected in ur essays and interview.
… and ur recommendation letters.
this is freakin insane man!
GOD!!!!
Ram I have called USEFP today, they told me that emails and letter will be despatced in two days. I think that those that are not selected are informed by email and letter therefore……
@Zee, they told that selection has been done or not?
They just told that u will come to know in two days by email or letter and they have planned to end it before 30th
yes that’s exactly what they told me when i called on monday, that u’ll come to know by the 30th.
@S
Are u also applying directly
What area u have, I am also EE PhD Applicant
@Zee
I’m a Master’s applicant for EE.
a Good friend , in states on fullbright, jsut called…
her friend got the fullbright…
i dont know anymore details…
seriously guys, sleep on it! it’s really quite late and realistically there’s no chance now! but you never know, miracles do happen (although, they do have a scientific explanation!
) but still move on already!
Also, we only have around 5-6% of the total number of applicants on this forum. So statistically speaking, there is a possibility that no one here gets it. But i also hope that does not happen
yar i just recieved an email..it says m a principal candidate..omg..wat does dis mean..m shivering
Congratulations, Sehar. I hope you have a good education and degree program in US. As for myself, I’m an alternate
. Was half expecting it – time to explore other options now. Best of luck to everyone.
Cheers,
Amirali.
Correction – the name is amirali, not arjun
.
ur an alternate?i dont blieve dis?
They switched my application to the PhD program, and there were a lot of good candidates. There are always a lot of factors….plenty of scope to apply to universities separately, maybe try and publish one or two papers. Congratulations again to you, sehar. Guess we’re going to be hearing back from everyone on results over the next day or two….
Congratulations sehar
Hay I didnt receive email yet… are they still sending…Sehar you got for PhD or MS.??
So when are they sending rejection letters? I guess a score of 1500+ ain’t good enough.
i am selected for the masters.
n congrats shehryar..u know ur also a principal candidate.stop being shy:p
congrats sehar on getting selected
can u plz tell us ur profile

Hey Congratulations Sehar! …wishing you all the very best! ..n yes any advice for the prospective applicants would be really appreciated..
Hay Sehar, congratulations to you, plz don’t forget us while in States. I still didn’t received either acceptance email or rejection email. My program is MS leading to PhD and I am from basic sciences. I hope that they send emails to science applicants later..pray for me…

@Rajesh, I didn’t get email yet, but I have appeared in interview. Hope I’ll get by 30th of this month. I am from Mirpurkhas and what about you, did you appear in interview and where from u…etc?
The USEFP are closed on Saturdays. So its possible no one gets any emails today. Hope is still there till the 30th.
@Sehar: Congrats on being selected.
woohooo! Sehar, congrats, now leave this thread asap coz it’s doomed!!!
Congrats Sehar! What a profile. Is there anyone on this thread who was interviewed on the 10th of September… I wonder out of the 14 applicants that were interviewed that day who would get the scholarship. Any one????
Hey all!
I kept visiting this forum throughout this year’s fulbright journey. It really helped me stay updated and also worked as a good support system. I had applied for a PhD in Linguistics- received an email about acceptance just yesterday. And, my GRE score was pathetic- 480 verbal, 360 quantitative!! Now I intend to take it again to improve my chances of getting into some good university.
Uzma
Congratulations Uzma. I guess you should work hard on your verbal if you are going for linguistics. Also be careful about the university application deadlines, as most of them are around mid-december.
Sehar and Uzma Congrats
I am just hoping against the hope to get Fulbright..
But ut seems too late
btw anyone for MPA degree
I am an EE Aplicant having following Profile and did not received call yet.
MS (Elect) (NUST) 73%
B.E. (Elect) (NUST)3.1 GPA
GRE Q 800, V 540
TOEFL 105
One Papper in International Conference
5+ Years of R&D and Teaching Experience
What is the opnion why I am not called
@Ahmed
U seem to have excellent profile
There is no reason they would’t call u
I think u should wait
@Ahmed
Your profile is quite good.
Did they call you for the interview?
@Ahmed, good profile yaar, did you appear in interview? and what is your age?
Dear All,
Great work with helping each other out .. I am a Fulbright Alumni and have met hundreds of Fulbrighters and know their profiles. I want to tell you some of the things so that you all can benefit from it
1) Those with the best profile may not be called for an interview. As Fulbright is not just about who has the highest GPA and GRE score. Fulbright staff takes into consideration a lot of things and based on that invite candidates. For sure, the better GPA and GRE score you have the more you have a better chance of securing the scholarship. However it is not guaranteed. So those who has a good GPA and are not called – don’t lose heart and apply for admissions abroad yourself. I know many people who applied and got TA/RA ships and was able to fund yourself.
2) If you can fund yourself through University Scholarship / Personal funds – then its always better than Fulbright Scholarship as you never know that you get a great opportunity to live and work in USA – which in case of Fulbright you will not be able to accept.
The below article sums up a lot of other things that I wanted to say .. So go ahead and read it
http://www.pkstudent.com/standardized-tests/pakistan-us-fulbright-program/
I appeared for interview in the first slot that is in June I belive. My age is 31 years.
Don’t despair yet fellows. They cannot email everyone in 2 days. Look on the bright side: we also haven’t received rejection yet.
@S, you are right, we can wait till 30th. Inshallah we’ll get acceptance… I hope so..
Did anybody get rejection letter? please post…they can’t send rejection emails but postal letters… I heard so
@Ram
Well the FAQs said they would send emails for rejection and make calls to the finalists. And now they’re emailing the finalists and alternates. I think rejections will also be made through emails as its the cheapest option. They wouldn’t wanna invest any more on the unfortunate ones that don’t get in. Later on they’ll probably make calls to the finalists for further details. In any case, lets pray and hope for the best.
Actually, they also send the rejection letters through snail mail. I know! I had applied for the summer programme of Fulbright in 2007, and for PhD last year, and I have the rejection letters safe with me! The only thing is that you get them very late. I had called them first and they had told me that I hadn’t been selected and by mistake, they sent me two rejection letters later, which weren’t a surprise since I already knew. So, what you can do is call them up in a week and ask.
Also S, I need a good score for the quantitative part too, because there’s a whole area of quantitative research which is important in Linguistics. Anyway, I’m still looking at different universities and their requirements and if GRE matters a little less for some, I might go for them. I also need to ask the Fulbright people if I have the kind of time to take GRE beginning of December given the deadlines of schools. Let’s see!
Thank you all for keeping us all informed. I gave interviews for both Masters and PhD, but I haven’t received a call yet. Just wanted to ask whether anyone from an engineering background has received an acceptance call? I heard they are preferring candidates with a background in arts to those in engineering – can anyone shed some light on that? In any case, it is good to know that they inform the people who are unlucky to get rejected.
@Uzma: There are plenty of universities which don’t require exceptional GRE scores. You should definitely try applying to them. I would have suggested you some names, but I have no knowledge about universities offering linguistics. Best of luck.
Something to cheer you all up!
When you feel like giving up, remember why you held on for so long in the first place. (Author Unknown)
@Utopia
A friend of mine going for EE has received the offer email. But the initial advertisement for the Fulbright Scholarship did mention some fields that would get more priority and engineering was not among them
@ utopia , one of my friends got a call for Phd in Bio medical engineering , he did his Bachelors of Electrical engineering from Nust,
Lets hope for the best.
I am an electrical engineer from UET lahore , was selected for first round of interviews in august (for Masters), Now awaiting for the Ultimate desicion
Rgds
OMER
Omer your friend has received the acceptance e mail?
I was soooo used to rejection emails that I had prepared myself for another- like they say, hope for the best but be prepared for the worst! Just remember that if you do not get to hear from the USEFP guys this time, secure admission in some universities on your own and apply for TAship. I was just too lazy for that, otherwise I’ve heard it’s wayyy better than Fulbright in many ways- at least you don’t have to return if you don’t want to!
Utopia (I wonder what keeps you guys from using your real names here!), I have been writing to different universities and have received some really good responses from some good universities, like the University of Illinois (I’m not even thinking of places like Harvard, Yale and the likes!). University of Massachusetts also hasn’t given any minimum for GRE. I’m also kinda interested in Cornell. Michigan University too doesn’t look that strict about GRE but their programme looks boring.
I called USEF just now…
All the selected candidates have been sent out the e-mails. Only the rejects are left and they will be sent out e-mails within the next two days…
I am sorry… hope everything works out well for all of us who did not get selected.
Salam.
@Uzma, can you join me on facebook? I want to share info about admi, TAship and specially about VISA. Please can you guide me in this connection. I don’t want to live here in this forum…Don’t have much power to read rejection email.
@Uzma, did you receive email?
@Seher, if sehar can guide us once she will be States..
Hamza is right. I just confirmed from the USEFP office. For those of us who haven’t received the selection emails, its over i’m afraid. We’ll receive the rejection emails soon. This was Allah’s will after all. Lets hope and pray we find better opportunities some other way.
Hey
This forum has been giving me oxygen for the last few months. I received an acceptance on friday. Elated and thankful. To you all as well. Good luck seriously.
Regards
@ uzma. can you plz give me info on the TAship. I have no clue about it. Thanks.
Good luck to everyone who got the fulbright.
Here’s a link that should be useful for information about teaching assistantship:
https://policy.itc.virginia.edu/policy/policydisplay?id=PROV-001
Basically, the first step I think is securing admission in some university. Only after that can you start making efforts for some financial support. These universities have a lot of money- many funding bodies. You might want to contact professors directly, share your work with them if you’ve done any that is relevant to what they’re doing/teaching. I suggest you start doing this asap because admission deadlines are fast approaching.
RC, I don’t know how you want me to add you on facebook. You haven’t even written with your real name here, and no I haven’t received any email. Sorry!
And guys, if you didn’t get Fulbright this year, do not despair. I didn’t get it last year but I didn’t give up. (And, to top it, I’m sure I didn’t even work half as much on my application this year as I had last time!) Had I not been a born procrastinator, I would’ve easily secured admission somewhere on my own and left, without signing any bond! And for women, there’s Annemarie Schimmel scholarship for UK (Masters) that you can go for. Just be a little active, google up universities and the departments you’re targetting, and start applying!
thankyou Uzma..for the encouragement and guidance..its a g8 help..n Congratulations for your selection!! all the best for all the future endeavors..
@uzma, here is id for facebook: raguelmoon@yahoo.com
God RC the paranoia! What is your user name on facebook? I can’t figure it out through the email id.
Hm, congratulations to all who have been selected. Seems as if I didn’t make it. On to other opportunities, I guess.
@uzma, it is Ram Chand
205 results for that Ram! So just add me up on google talk- ar.uzma@gmail.com
Congratulation to all Fulbrighters,
I was disappointed earlier for not being selected but now I am happy I have awarded Fellowship of 23,000USD
with fee waiver as RA at University of Florida.
No Bond Freedom
Has any body received rejection email yet?
How far can u deviate from what you have written in the Program statement for the application.
Crank, depends on what programme you’ve been selected for. If it’s a Masters, you will have problems changing your department, if that’s what you want. Within the major you’ve opted for, you can still have a combination of subjects which are relevant, yet add a little variety. If it’s a PhD, and my case is the same, you still have to stick to the major department you had stated you’d want to go to, but for your PhD, you can shift your focus drastically. I have a friend who wrote about working in one area in her study objectives, and after spending some time and studying other stuff, she decided to change it, and now she’s working on something totally different from her initial proposal. You are supposed to grow while you study, and in this growth if you realize that you need to work on something (remaining within the broader area you had identified), that should be fine. For instance, if I say I’ll study how linguistic inequalities work in Pakistan, I might say in some time that I feel researching on the language testing system of Pakistan is more important- it would all be related to Linguistics, but still wayyy different from the original idea.
And Ahmed, that’s awwwesome!
@Uzma.. Please help me with this one.. I just got an email from USEFP, stating that I’m a principal candidate! What the hell does that mean??
Whatever is wrong with these people!
@waqas, when did you get email? principal means you have been selected.. congrad…reply plz
This mean u ve made it..:)..congrats..n c dis thread was not doomed and still not doomed:)..theres a hope till u actualy see the rejection/letter,email
Ok can some1 tell me how long with the FSB take to approve our grants?I just communicated with the contact person assigned to me and he said dat they will let us know as soon as they arrive but whats the usual timeframe?
Waqar,
Principal=Highest in rank, authority, character, importance, or degree
Candidate=someone who is considered for something
So yeah, they might consider you! But, did they say they’d finally give you the scholarship??!! They’re teasing you. :p
@sehar, I heard .. in dec-jan , not sure but prev fulbrighter told me
Uzma,
I had applied for a masters in entrepenuership and i have realised after some research that most degrees are in business schools and basically MBA degrees.
Where do i go from here?
I have heard of MBA in entrepreneurship. What about that? In your university preference list, give the names of universities which do offer a Masters in Entrepreneurship itself. You will find some at least?
@Waqas
WHAT. I ASKED THE USEFP ONLY YESTERDAY AND THEY SAID ALL SELECTEES HAD ALREADY BEEN INFORMED. Does that mean there’s still hope??
@waqas, are you serious, plz tell the truth…
@RC I got email at 11am today!
@Sehar obviously it’s doomed.. I mean why me? they could have atleast asked me before sending the email!
but I’ll get back at them soon
@Uzma no, I think they just wanna stalk me!!
@S & RC … I’m serios goddamit, ready to swear on my dead dog’s grave! ok jokes apart, yes I did get the email at 11am today and like all of you who knew that acceptance letters had already been sent, I was not expecting it and so it scared the shit out of me. Also, just yesterday, I had already told a friend of mine, and fellow fulbright applicant, that it was over! i really don’t know how I’m gonna tell him about my selection now.. and I don’t know if I can share the contents of the email but I would love to!
@Waqas, what do you mean by “they could have atleast asked me before sending the email!” What is writen in email? selection or rejection?
Uzma,
The entreprenuership degrees offered are tied in with engineering programs which is not my field and an MBA in entreprenuership is exactly what i am looking for. I dont think it is a change in field. what do you think? Also, one year programs which are being offered are mostly for people just out of undergrad programs sort f diploma type degrees and i dont think i want to go for those.
I meant that it was unsettling for me.. This is what the first para of the email says: “Congratulations! You have been selected as a Principal candidate for the Fulbright/USAID Master’s Scholarship Program for fall 2010. You should receive a formal congratulation letter from USEFP in a few days.”
oh congrats to you.. it means that emails are still in process…thanks GOD…
Well, congratulations, Waqas. And best of luck to the rest of us.
Crank, I’m sure many universities offer an Entrepreneurship concentration in their MBA programmes. Check out web pages of different universities, like go to the University of Massachusetts page. Or, google ‘MBA entrepreneurship’ with the name of the university you’re thinking of and see if you get something.
And no, it won’t be a change of field.
They do. But will the fulbright ppl let me do an MBA with entreprenuership concentration.???
How come people at usefp are not telling the facts clearly. I mean they told S and Hamza that all selectees have been sent out acceptance emails(info conveyed on 25th). But waqqas got the acceptance email on 27th. I wonder whats going on. I called yesterday and was told that we cant tell anything over phone. ???
Yes, they are very unreliable.. I experienced the same discomfort around the time of the application deadline, when they would give a different version of information to everyone who would call them.. Same thing happened now..
I just got an email, I have been selected as a principal candidate for PhD. There is still hope guys, they are still sending out acceptance calls.
@ Waqas: Congrats. It seems we will be together for our stand-up duet.
haha awesome man! let’s think of a cool name for the show… something on the lines of Utopia-Dystopia!
Congratulations Utopiaaaaaaa!!!:)
Crank, I don’t think they would have a problem because you’d still be a Masters student specializing in Entrepreneurship. To confirm and relieve yourself of this needless tension, you can ask the contact person assigned to you. That should clear things out although you’re safe anyway.
Haha, love the name Waqas…it’s a deal then.
Thanks Uzma.
Thanks Uzma,
I will confirm sorry for this irritating line of questioning. they just dont reply infact its hilarious that they email you telling you to contact through email.
hahaha
It’s not irritating at all. Feel free to discuss any issues you have; you might get an answer to something here which would save you the trouble of writing to them and then waiting and waiting! You can actually prepare your university preference list which would have the name of the programme you want to go for. If they have issues, they’ll tell you. And IIE anyway doesn’t necessarily apply to the same places that you give in your list so don’t worry.
Hey I just received a University preference email without getting the selection email. What does it mean?
Has anyone else got it?
Plz help me my heart is pounding at the rate of nauts….
@Vicky: U should call them up immediately and demand an explanation.
@Vicky, from where did you get the email? i means who is sender?
Yes Vicky just call them up.
Im shit confusedri ght now man
I freakin out!
Wat the hell is going on!
@humza, what did u get?
Uzma,
Do the IIE inform you where they are applying? also you are allowed to apply to places which you have not listed so if you get in will that take prefrences. To be very honest the usefp people do not have command over the whole process and these things should be made much clearer. Anyway. they have asked for them tommorow so i am going to list business schools and pray.
Regards
@sehar, I didnt get neting today…waiting waiting waithig…………………
Has any one received rejection emails? Are they gonna be at least a LITTLE nice and give the ppl who didn’t get the scholarship a little closure by letting them formally know that they didn’t get in? Or are they gonna continue with the mystery game they seem to love playing so much. The month is almost over. We were supposed to know the final result in the firt week of october!!!!
Nah RC, I didn’t get jack shit…
I’m just confused as to what’s going on
The guy told me only reject emails were to be sent n in the last 2 days a lot of ppl have been sent approvals. Its a freakin game for them man, not cool at all!!!
Now I’ve got hope again n truth be told, I don’t want it again!!!
ok herez something dat cud b new. They sent university preference list again with the confirmation emails.Today they mailed every1(i know)and called them later(to confirm the reciept)that they shld submit the university preferences by 2morow afternoon.Must be some deadline for naming the unis to IIE or watever it is.So i think those who didnt get the instruction to meet the deadline, they have probably missed it..but agreed with every1 else that they shld come clean with watever it is..
Crank, IIE informs you of where they have applied on your behalf some time in December- the first week. If you don’t get to know about this by that time, make sure that you ask them. If they haven’t applied to some place you were interested in and had mentioned in your preference list, ask them to, or ask them if you can apply on your own. They don’t stop you. You can apply- the only thing is that you have to pay the application ka paisa from your own pocket, and you also have to take care of the deadlines of applications which are usually end of December. If you get admission in some university directly, IIE doesn’t have any issues with it.
i got it from usefpakistan and I got the call from them that I have been selected as the Principal candidate. Thank God and now I have to provide my University preferences by tommorrow.
Congratulationssss!
Congratulations to all the principal candidates
I would like to know if there’s a chance of a principal candidate not being given the scholarship or not being accepted by the scholarship Board in NY. Has anyone heard of that happening or does being selected as a pc guarantee ur trip to the States?
Yes, shehryar, yesterday I was reading the one-page info they gavve us on the day of the interview, it clearly said that around 250 will be interviewed out of the 1050 applicants and the final number of scholarships would depend upon funding! so basically, the USEFP have clearly not committed on anything yet.
Yeah i know but that was stage 1. Clearly they must’ve shortlisted those 250 and categorized them into principals, alternates and rejects. What id like to know, if anyone has an idea, is what reasons could there be for a pc not getting a scholarship..reasons like visa issues and stuff
Visa is solely the responsibility of the candidate. If you do not get a visa, the scholarship stands void.
Great! being a victim of over-excitement, i told a whole lot of people that i got the scholarship. Now i see that being a principal candidate is not such a big deal after all
@shehryar, did you get email? when?
Here is the thing. We have to pass through 3 steps before being declared a Fulbright SCHOLAR:
1.Admission:
One current fulbrighter told me(claiming it to be the inside story at IIE)that they want u to get placement in the year ur awarded scholarship for.One of the reason why people say that IIE has ignored there university preferences is dat a few students get over ambitious and name all da high ranking and high demanding universities, but IIE doesnt want the student to get rejection from all the 3 places so they apply to the places where they think the student will easily be admitted.IF u realy want to get over this fear of rejection at this stage and improve ur chances of getting into a uni of ur own choice, apply independently and later tell them u got the admision and want to accept it.they wont mind it.
2.FSB:
Googled alot, never found anyone saying they were rejected by the FSB.There job is to finaly approve the number of grants and the funding of the program. With hillary clinton in pakistan and issuing the statement that theres a need to improve mutual understanding b/w americans and pakistanis(which is the mission of fulbright),i realy doubt if they r going to have any isue wid the amount of grant.USefp is administring the scholarships and they will have an idea how much grants are to be approved each year.FSB will not reject any1 unless he/she has got a criminal record
3.VISA
freakish..but again..u got admission..u got funding..ur going for only 2 years on j1 visa.they ll do dis whole security clearance thing, may annoy the crap outa u,but chances are that u ll get it..
@Shehryar ..don’t sweat at it dude, I told my friends that I got selected as the principal candidate and there was still a long way to go (uni placement and visa) and none of them listened to me, instead they congratulated me on getting the scholarship!
Rest is our luck and the will of Allah. We cant have anything against the divine’s will so..keep praying for his blessings
Sure man! sweat time’s not here yet, im still single
khair lets hope for the best for everyone. Seeing ur posts above, i seriously think u could give a tough time to Chris Rock and Russell Peters if u go there
@sehar…thanks for the info. or should i say insider info
@Shehryar, when did u get email???????????????????????
Last week Ram, tuesday i think.
@shehryar last week? why didnt u inform last week…?
Awein
@Shehryar ..thanks man, but I have stage fright *trembles*
ROFL @ Waqas…
If you tremble on stage, you would give Elvis Presley a run for his money…..
Darn… I forgot the king was dead.
hahaha or better still, I’ll go on stage in a burqa!

*last
@ waqas thanks yaar
n congrats :@
@ rc i think i have heard that rejection emails are for those who got interview calls
but just received uni preference emails and submitted right now.. dont know about acceptance or rejection
This is for all those who received university preference email:
Did you guys mention your preferences in the application form?. If yes, why are they asking for it again?
yes I think it’s just to make it easy for them, access wise, and maybe some people might be able to reconsider their options this way..
@ A: I did write them in the original application, but I added one more now.
did anyone apply for an MBA? whats the probability of someone getting a fulbright do do an MBA…i heard the chances are pretty slim …. plus are there any MBA applicants who got the final nod?
I guess final emails will be sent out on October 31st… nothing confirm though, just a guess..
congrats to all those who got the acceptances
RC i want your contact. I am a student frm IBA, Karachi wantd to have some info abot fulbright etc.
@Daniyal, my contact: raguelmoon (at) gmail.com
Hello everyone..anybody from the interviews in september been selected? I have heard that the process will continue till month end..which by the way ends tomorrow for ussss
@Beloos ..I was interviewed on 11th Sept and received acceptance email on the 27th of this month..
@waqas, you figures are not matching. somewhere in this thread you wrote that u received acceptnce on 23rd and now on 27th. and you are that huy who first got accept on 1st oct… you are lying…stop all this in this forum…
@RC ..relax man, I never said I received acceptance on the 23rd.. This is my original comment about my acceptance email, it’s dated 27th Oct:
http://www.pkstudent.com/2008/06/25/fulbright-2009-scholarships/#comment-3247
and the guy who posted about acceptance earlier this month was Shehryar, I think.. why would I lie?
I even pasted the first para of the acceptance email!
@waqas, sorry man, it was shehryar not you, sorrryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
lol its ok
Poor old Ram Jaane … doesn’t remember a thing. tch tch tch
For those of you that have not received any email yet clarifying your status, you should call USEFP ext 513, and ask for about your application status. This way, regardless of getting an email, atleast you will know what your status is…its better than all the waiting and worrying!…everyone I know has done this
Just kidding Ram
If tomorrow is the last day, I hope u get the email. You’ve been a really active member of the forum for the past 4 months
I received a letter through TCS today saying I didn’t get in. At least now I don’t have to keep waiting end-lessly. Good luck to you all.
@Blue..So they tell you whether you have been selected or rejected?
hi,
i intend to apply for FB,but my academic record is not good enough, wht u ppl suggest, shud i apply or not
@Beloos…yea they do….thats how i found out my results and a few friends found out theirs. Call the ext.513 and Talk to Haroon Jamshed…he’s one of the supervisors for people. Tell him that you heard they tell people their status, and if they try to say “just wait for the letter”…just go all pleading and say shit like “plz im dying here…really just wanna know SOMETHING”. Hes a good guy, he’ll tell u.
@Sadia….I suggest you try either way. I never thought I was good enough either but honestly just close ur eyes, breath and give it…worse comes to worse u wont get it? big deal…u tried!
I just received rejection letter today in the morning through TCS
. It was kind of apologetic and said that there was a lot of competition etc etc. They asked that i should apply again for 2011 session. I just want to ask the successful candidates about their opinion as to what went wrong in my case. These are my credentials:
B.E Electrical (NUST): CGPA 3.73
GRE: Quantitative 790
Verbal 570
TOEFL: 116/120
Three years of work experience out of which 2 years is of university teaching
My writing skills arnt bad (atleast thats what I think), my study objs and personal statement were good. I have been a good student all my life.
I was interviewed once on 25th July
The negatives in my case might have been:
Since I am mother of a two years old daughter, I have not able to work since August, 2006. Having a 2 years old dependent might have been a drawback in itself. And I received kind of negative vibes right from the start of my interview. It was as if Ms Rita had already made up her mind against me and calling me for the interview seemed like a formality. She seemed very unfriendly, even harsh, I dont know why. Did any of you feel like that?
What do you say? Thanks for your time.
@S I am sorry. I share your feelings
One more thing, Ms Rita asked about my relatives in the US and I told her that two sisters and one of my husband’s sisters live there. That put her off even more. She said that “this is a student exchange program, I am doubtful as to why you have applied for this grant”. And I was like, what does she mean by that. I would still be a pakistani student in US reflecting 100% of my culture even if I have a 100 relatives in US. ????
My interview was good and there were no harsh words, no such queries which went against me. I have no family members in Sates even outside my district. I have 7years of Govt teaching experiencing and I have been a good student in my whole life. My GPA, TOEFL and GPA is good one and I got position in my terminal degree. My statement of purpose is also good. But I don’t know why I didn’t received any emails/letter either acceptance or rejection. But now I am sure it must be rejection. I hope that they select me but time is over…..
They also advised me in interview to change my application from “MS” into “MS leading to PhD” program and I said “yes”.
@A, where are you from?
Is there anybody who is from “MS leading PhD” program and has been selected…???
@RC form Lahore
Has anyone been selected as an alternate candidate?
@A: You should not despair at all! You have an excellent profile, I would suggest that you apply directly to universities instead of relying on Fulbright. I salute you for considering Fulbright even though you’re a mother.
Best of luck!
@A.
U have got an excellent profile.I am sure ur personal statement had all the things they want to have, hence they invited u for the interview.I am sure Allah has got something much better than this and He will reward u.
As far as the interview is concerned, one of the member of the interviewing panel has to act like a devil’s advocate..it happened wid me as well,i sort of felt that the psychologist is trying his best to convince me dat my subject is a total blunder and i shall tell them to change it to public health. And it is not my opinion,i read it on an alum’s blog..anyways,the criteria of selection is still a mystery.I hope u didnt get a controversial essay topic? What was dat n how did u handle that?
on behalf of the united states educational foundation in pakistan i want to thank you for your application and recent inteview for the 2010 fulbright /usaid/hec phd program you were among a small and and select group of interview finalists, but i regret to inform you that you were not selected as a grantee. the selection process was highly competitive and success depended on a number of factors. many excellent candidates did not make the final cut even with excellent grades and GRE and TOEFL scores. WE hope that you will not be discouraged and will reapply for the 2011 academic year. Also, we are encouraging excellent candidates like you to consider applying to universities in the united states on their own. our advising department can help you apply and to look for other sources of financial aid that might be available.
@A mashaAllah A..you’ve excellent credentials as all of us already know..Allah knows and does better..have faith and do not lose hope at all…there must be something better in store for you..all the best!! ..
@A
For Credentials like you have, u should apply for Top 20-50 usnews, I belive u would find TA/RA Position easily. Have u got MS degree also
Thank you so much for your kindness. I really appreciate it.
@Ahmed: Thank you. No, I don’t have a masters degree.
@Rida: Thank you for your concern and kind words. Means a lot to me, really.
@Sehar: It was simple, the author/book that has inspired you the most. I wrote about Bronte’s Jane Eyre.
@Utopia: Thank you. Best of luck to all of you.
May Allah give us what is the best for us. Allah knows and does the best for us.
@A The only reason why they might have rejected you, which comes to my mind, is that you can easily get funding on your own.. while we poor wretchs can not!
good luck!
I just found out about a couple of people who got the fullbright and damn im pissed off man… cauz it just doesnt make sense for them to be awarded that scholorship…
and a couple of them are really good scholors who could have gotten funding from not only any uni but from their employers too…
USEF has really disappointed me this time around man… it just doesnt make sense…!
Is there anyone eles who hasnot been informed. I havent received email/call/letter anything. they arent receiving calls or responding to emails.
its okk Z, a lot of people havent been contacted…
you’ll get your rejection letter soon… dont u worry
I received rejection letter today. Waiting over much relieved. Allah knows and does better.
you’re very welcome A
..i’m glad i were of some use :p
..
and all the best to all of us here..those who got thru…n those who didn’t..the world lies out there for both kinds guys
..cheers!! ..
I am applying for the fulbright scholarship this year and the last date is 18th. I have no time and I am about to start filling the application form. The major issue is that there are certain fields which are not very clear to me. If anyone can please provide me a filled application form then I will be able to use that as a reference. The USEFP people said that they cannot help anyone filling out the application. That is against there rules so please any previous scholarship holder or anyone whose been through this process, help me by sending the filled application form at dashingabdullah@hotmail.com
Now that the last date for Fulbright 2010 is over, I want to see some new comments. Start using this blog again
Any previous Fulbright who can answer our questions?
I invite all Fulbright applicants to start using this blog
Abdullah, were you able to apply for the Fulbright in time?
How can I help you mumtaz?
Helo Mumtaz,
I have also applied to full bright program this year and i have also got an email back from USEFP that they have recieved my application.
I had also applied last year but couldnt won the competion

Sorry Younis and Omar
I am a geologist and was out on my field trip to salt range.
I have applied for fulbright this year but have not received a confirmation from USEFP yet.
I wonder if USEFP has got my application. I sent it on the 13th of May.
Omar,
Have you applied for masters or PhD?
Younas,
Does Fulbright sends confirmation emails on the same date to all candidates???
No Mumtaz, At least not when I received it ..
They do it in batches — and put others in waiting list.
So, I can expect to receive the confirmation (of application receipt) in a week or so, maybe?
Please tell me something about yourself. You have been on this page since 2008
Hello!!!
are you there Younas?
Hey Mumtaz .. Actually I am one of the people behind this forum .. I am currently working as Product Manager – IT field.
Let me know if you need any other information.
Thanks
Ok Thanks
I will be in touch for my questions if USEFP has got my application.
Dear All,
Last year I appeared in Fulbright interview but coundnt get scholarship. However, this time I am going to apply US university directly. USEFP is not sincere to select good students. Last year I got admission(with full RA/TA funding) in US university but due to Fulbright I gave up. So bad…USEF only considers application from urban area specially from Punjab because all staff in the office is from Punjab. Many good students from Karachi didnt get any scholarship. If you’re from Punjab then it is bright chance otherwise please dont waste time and money…
RC,
Good to hear from you. But its in contrast to what the USEFP claims. It claims to prefer students from backward area such as FATA and Khyber Paktunkhwa (Formerly NWFP).
An RA/TA is a better option. You missed. Better luck this time.
Tell me something about you field.
Hi Mumtaz!
>>But its in contrast to what the USEFP claims. It claims to prefer students from backward area such as FATA and Khyber Paktunkhwa (Formerly NWFP).>>
yes they claim thats why i gave up RA/TA. but reality is that they dont give nay penny to rural applicants. I hate USEFP’s favouritism policy to Punjab.
Well I still want to give it a try although I am from Peshawar.
I have applied for MS in Geology.
My GRE score is 1140.
Is it a good enough score?
This is all crap! They mean what they say! They DO have extra marks for the people belonging to remote areas and women! But one should keep in mind that these are not the only criteria for determining the potential of the candidate! They look into your personal statement, study objectives, personality(confidence, maturity, interactiveness, frankness, passion). They can be really unpredictable at times, but they are not biased!just remember that its a cultural exchange program. They dont want nerds! They want people who can live the fulbright life!
and for you ramchand, who advised you to give up the TA ship for Fulbright?Whosoever did that was not sincere with his suggestion or perhaps had limited vision.I am a fulbright grantee, but if I get a TA/RA ship now,I would be more than happy to take that. You did know about the J1 stipulation and other issues related to fulbright? If you had that option in hand,it was a blunder on your part that you trusted the USEFP with your selection without even getting a proper notice!
Anyways,to all of you,who think they have solid scores and application,i strongly suggest applying for the University fundings. They are much better although fulbright has got its own benefits. But its certainly not the end of the world, and one should decide about the future carefuly!
Chill out 2010,
Its a free country. Everyone should be respected for his or her opinion.
It sure is,but correction is needed at certain points.I just dont want other grantees to be demoralized because of one bad example!
2010,
Are you a fulbright or gonna be fulbright?
I am a grantee alreay!
@2010
Ok thats great. Can you tell me something about your field and GRE, TOEFL scores etc.
What are the things I need to know about Fulbright in your opinion?
Dear All,
Have you visited Virtual Education Fair http://www.vefme.com – Its a great opportunity for you to meet with top academic institutes online. It is currently live. Register and attend it for Free.
Zahid,
Have you already applied or planning for next year?
2010,
I have applied this year. Haven’t got the confirmation from USEFP though.
My proposed field is Geology.
I am lecturer at the Department of Geology, University of Peshawar.
My GRE score is 1140
Well everything that you want to know is already here in this forum. You should mail them though,to confirm if they recieved your application because they do send the confirmations in time.Regarding what you need to know about it,i think its too late as u already have submitted ur essay.as we discused last year they pay more attention to ur essays and extracurricular activities.Lets hope u get a call for the interview, then i can tell u more about this.ur GRE is fine,GRE hasnt any significant value in selection, only important when it comes to university admissions.I hope u mentioned dat ur study objectives are best suited for the interests of pakistan because this is the thing they r most interested into.with ur teaching experience,i am sure u do have a gud chance of being called for the interview.but do check with them why havent they they confirmed da reception yet!
Hi 2010, (Sounds Awkward….can I ask your name??)
I have asked USEFP. They say it will take about 20 days to inform all the applicants. So I will have to wait.
hey guys,
This forum has been a great help. Seriously.
I am graduating from one of Pakistan’s top Business Schools in June 2011 InshAllah. Right now I am not sure what to do. Most good business schools abroad require work experience, for Masters. My family situation is such that I must complete my masters asap. I need some advice:
1) Will going for my masters right after the BBA be a good option?
2) Apart from the FulBright, what other options do I have FOR financial help? What is TA/RA?
3)Considering that I am graduating AFTER a year, is it wise to look for universities/applications/sponsorships right now? Or should I start applying later?
4)Aren’t universities in Australia etc good enough?
And most importantly, how to go about applying for universities and scholarships? I feel really lost right now, as to where to start applying? how? where to find scholarships? who to ask for help? or should I just look for them later? Is Fulbright the only option?
Fahd
You have got alot of time since you are graduating in 2011.
Fulbright is a good but not the only option. Most of the US schools require GRE and TOEFL scores for admission. My advice to you would be to start preparing for the tests. Since you are in the business field, you may be asked for GMAT instead of GRE. A good score on the GRE is usually necessary fot RA/TA (RA=Research Assistant, TA=Teaching Assistant)
It is usually easy to get scholarship for countries other than US, since they only require IELTS or TOEFL.
Any gonna be fulbright here????
hey guys .. it’s good see u all here .. anyone knows when the interviews actually start?
has anyone applied for the science and technology award
Interviews will be conducted from July till September.
Final decision made in October-Noivember.

Hi Guys
Yes actually the candidate receives a system generated Email once his data has been feeded into their database. Thats how it works. I am sure some applicants are still to be informed. I got mine on 2nd June
Thanks alot regarding all the information u people sheared.
Sigh
Bumblebee (love to say this word BUMBLEBEE)

No Dear, Its gonna take sometime. Keep your fingers crossed
apparently the ones who applied for science and technology award .. the interviews have already been conducted
Sigh
I think it is too soon to say that the interviews have already been conducted for the science and technology award. Dont worry you will hear from them soon. Otherwise you would have heard from them about the rejection.
Have some sighs of relief!!!
even i thought so! untill i called today and spoke to the program incharge myself … interviews done and over with .. only 2 canidates were selected!
@Sigh
Wow that is really hard to believe !! The process takes time …i mean they need to put in the info ..then sift through it and then call the potential candidates … last time around i thing the interviews started late june or some thing …. Sigh dont worry … you will soon breathe a sigh of relief ;P
Well well it really is surprising.
well this is not surprising but shocking….
according to FAQs interviews are conducted from june till september…
so just relax every body… Inshallah we all will get an interview call soon..
hey there are two scholarships .. one is the fulbright science and technology award .. and the other is the fullbright scholarship .. i was talking abt the award… so best of luck to everyonnnnnnnnnnnne who has applied for the scholarship .. interviews for that havent started
..
Muneeb
This was said regarding the Fulbright science and technology award. Not the “regular” Fulbright MS and PhD programme
Oh Dear
Sigh you posted that two minute earlier than me
ok ok i thought the other way.. and thanks to both of you for the info
Hi dudes>>>>what are your analytical writing scores???
nobody shows concern about their analytical score….
we Pakistani are weak in section as well….
4.5 .. yours??
Mine 3.5 Only. I think it is not really that important since USEFP does not have a lower limit set for Analytical Writing.
By the way whats yours?
You people have excellent scores….but i really don’t think you are telling your actual score…
You see 3.5 as an excellent score. Let me tell you it is just 23 Percentile. Means only 23% candidates have scored lower than 3.5 and 77% have scored above 3.5
How much you have got??
its only 2.5…its really a bad score!!!!
Well it is. But remember USEFP does not really care about the analytical writing scores and thats why they dont have a lower limit for it.
What about your GRE score?
Younas (Plz Comment)
I have taken GRE on the 5th of May and was informed that my score report was sent to me on 27th but I did not receive it.I asked ETS about it and they said we are sending you a duplicate copy. 8 days have passed since then and have still not got any score report. What the hell are they doing. I am not intereseted in whether they have sent me a duplicate copy or not (ironically, they proudly said “We are sending you a duplicate copy FREE OF CHARGE”). They have made a mess of it and I dont know whether I will ever get my score report……
Any idea/views on when the interviews for the fulbright scholarship are starting ?!? anyone got any updates ??!?
Btw Zahid , ironically the same thing has happened with me …and that too twice ! now they say that i’ll have to give 23dollars if i want a copy !! get a printout from the website in the interim as your scores will be available online … but i dont know where the problem is …its either pakistan post or something else…
There is something fishy fishy. This has happened to one of my friend as well. Wow, good way for ETS to make some money. I am also sceptical pecause in their first mail reply they said “Your score report has been sent to you on 17th May, so wait for it to be delivered. In their second mail however they said “Although your score report was sent to you on 27th May, we are sending you a duplicate copy”
Was it 17th or 27th, I guess none of them………
Sorry the mail said 17th first and then 28th
Anyone who has been called for an interview????
called them a few days back .. july mid is what they told me!
Great Information, thanks for the great Article. Really great topic to write about on my blog. I probably set a link from another Website. single mother scholarships
USEF is busy with the Visas of last years fulbrighters so interviews havent start yet…
So just pray and hope for the best….
@Mohammad Zahid: I am having the same problem. I took the GRE test on 3rd of May and still doesn’t have my scores. I mailed them and they said they’ll now mailed me a duplicate copy free of charge and its been some 4 to 5 days. I haven’t yet recieved the copy. Now lets see what happens? I don’t know if this is an issue with ETS or with the ever-famous Pakistan Post.
Moreover, i’ve heard that there’s a deadline for Fullbright applicants to submit their original GRE score reports. Anybody has any idea about that?
>Doc
I think its the problem with ETS. Let me tell you I have not had any problem with Pakistan Post ever. Any letter that has been sent to me through Pakistan Post has been delivered to me. Pak Post is not that bad as is commonly believed.
Any mail from US takes only a week to be deliver here in Pakistan.
I contacted the Post Office in Peshawar University Campus, and was advised to ask for the tracking No. of the Air Mail. To my disbelief ETS does not even offer tracking facility.
Regarding sending the GRE score to FULBRIGHT (USEFP), its the responsibility of ETS to send scores to organizations you mentioned when you took the test. It is sent electonically…
Don’t worry about that…..
thats the issue bhai jan. If ETS is not sending us the scores on time then how do we know that it’ll send the scores on time to the institutions.
by the way, in terms of keeping our options open. Any suggestions for any other scholarships which are (if not on the same level as Fulbright) beneficial enough in terms of funds and features ?
yes Doc there are scholarships coming… tell me about your field i will guide you
I have completed my Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Electronic engineering recently and I am aspiring to grab a worthy scholarship to fulfill my dream of studying in a foreign university or institution. In the meanwhile I am searching for an employment which is really hard to find in a country we are living in!
hmmm… now dear what is ur gpa and gre score
Hi all. Another applicant here. Got the email confirmation of receipt of application. Lets keep each other updated about statuses. anyone getting the interview call please post here.
Thanks.
Hi Sanguinuis
Anything about your profile?
Hi. Nothing much about me. The only thing that prompted me to post on this forum is that I’ve applied for filmmaking. Probably no one else does this so I read through others experiences out of interest. Fulbright seems to be a very tricky process. Very contrasting people with very different stories to tell.
Got 660 in quant. and 590 in verbal. I also work full time so couldnt study at all. Scored a dismal 3.5 on the analytical which does baffle me as that was what i thought i did best on.
i did my masters in philosophy.
What do you think is in store for me?
Wow a Philosophy graduate making films.
Good times to come. I mean we will get rid of movies like
Badmash GUJJAR
Shera GUJJARA
Graduate GUJJAR.
On a more serious note;
You will definately be called for an interview.
@ muneeb: My GRE scores are not very great. I got 630 in the Quant. section and a mere 410 in Verbal, which I suppose is just a very average score. Moreover, being an Engineering graduate, my Quantitative score should’ve been much better!
hey guys .. good going .. gre is just not everything .. although your scores are reasonably good .. i must say. sanguinius > whoa .. not bad since your major was philosphy. good luck ..
hey guys i have applied for actuarial sciences which is very unique field in itself and i am now waiting for call….when do they start ??? any idea
@Doc u should apply to university direct as well there are some universities which dont consider Gre like MIT if u have a good GPA u should go for it and there is also good chance of getting in cambridge becoz there masters criteria is not that tough.. My friend recently went there… ur Gre is not bad be confident hopefully u can get the call if u have good essay written… and had some work experience..
@Zahid: Lolz. actually Grad Gujjar would be an interesting project.
@sigh: It would be interesting what they put me through. I wonder if they’ve ever given a fulbright scholarship for filmaking. I strongly doubt they will, but at least i’ll know i tried.
@sanguinius
new field is always welcomed.. keep ur hopes alive hope fully u ll get the call…
Hello experts
i have applied for this scholorship.
I have 3.8 GPA in engineering
GRE 660(Q) 550(v)
3 yrs of work exp
n want to persue masters in the same field
what are my chances of getting this scholorship?????
wow Ad you have got good record…
@AD thats a very good profile… i think you’l definetly make the fisrt cut …the rest will depend on how well you do at the interview….
Former Fulbrighter, Ivy League Alumnus, Interviewer for USEF/P
I really appreciate the ‘experts’ around here, but please read the posts by the Fulbright alumni to understand how the process works. It’s REALLY clearly written up there. You only need to know that stuff to write a good application and give a good interview, period.
@ Film making guy: There are always a dozen or so people applying for film making. It’s not at all novel. If you get the interview call, try finding an angle that is unique to you and your work. There are SO many people who go study film making that just going and saying, ‘I want to study film making’ is like me asking you what car you bought and you telling me its a car, with four wheels. Ofc I know it’s a car with four wheels, but what’s the brand, what’s the model, what does it do? Why is it special?
@ Engineering guy: No dis-respect, but we get people with 4.00 GPA and 780/800 GRE quants. Your credentials are quite mediocre. Besides, engineering is not a priority field. I hope that you get the interview, but you will need to convince the interviewers why you should be given the scholarship, despite mediocre credentials. (Don’t be scared, at least now you know what issues you need to work on)
If you don’t get called for the interview/ do get called for the interview but don’t get the scholarship, sorry about that, but please try and understand while applying that it’s a cultural and educational exchange program. Read up the posts from alumni on this thread.
Those who come from rural or disadvantaged backgrounds are automatically preferred but you need to still prove that you deserve it.
You will only be discriminated against, if we believe that you or your family has the ability to pay your tuition in the US by yourself. Don’t try and hide it, we will find it out sooner or later if you lie.
It’s not JUST you GPA and GRE scores that count. If your GPA is 4.00, yeah, that’s remarkable. 3.00-3.99, same thing. <3.00, there must be a reason that you were called for an interview. Probably disadvantaged background or minority community. What counts is how much you know about culture, how socially active have you been. We don't select book worms, unless they really amuse us in some way.
GRE's don't matter if you have talent and are not a maths/engineering person. If you have not studied maths beyond 10th grade and get a 400 Quants score, it's ok, just be a special person, and a special candidate. You may have to give the GRE again after you get selected, but that doesn't really matter. What matters is your PS and interview.
Ever wonder why so many people from LUMS get the grant? Because they understand what the program is all about and prepare accordingly.
If you are lucky enough to get an interview, please read up the interview tips that I have randomly posted at my blog http://www.drhyder.wordpress.com and make life easier for the interviewers by not getting shell-shocked when asked, 'Why should you be given the scholarship?'
Good luck.
Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with the USEF/P or the Fulbright program in any way. The opinions expressed in the previous post are my own and are based on my observations as a guest interviewer and do not represent the views of USEF/P or the Fulbright program.
PS: If you have questions about what I wrote, post them on my blog. I will briefly answer relevent ones. Otherwise, there is more than enough information on this thread to clear up all queries. You just need to read all the 500 posts and you will be an expert on everything Fulbright.
@ Hyder
Its an excellent blog, thnx for sharing it.Yes i know my credentials are quite mediocre thts y i was asking abt chances of getting this scholorship.I would take up your advise thnx once again.
@Hyder
Wow that was a remarkable insight into the process!! Thanks alot for being candid and sharing it with everyone else !
@ Hyder
I read your blog too and it helped a lot aswell.. thank you so much for sharing…
@Hyder: Thanks a lot for that *very* timely enlightenment. Went through your blog and found it helpful. Its actually sad but the educational system prevalent in Pakistan may prepare great and even exceptional minds, they are woefully inadequate in preparing good public speakers and hence leaders as well.
P.S: I only wish you could have intervened about 400 or so posts earlier so we didn’t have to trudge through hundreds upon hundreds of redundant questions and ‘educated guesses’ passing off as answers. But still, better late than never.
Thank you, and hope to see you on the other side.
@Hyder: And me reasons for applying to filmaking were not at all because it was ‘novel’, but because I’m very passionate about it. I’ve been working in the media industry for a while now, and I don’t think the power of media can be overstated. Your blog post about McChrystals interview being a fine example.
At the same time I don’t really feel like making Gujjar films, and since I don’t really drive an SUV and spend summers in Europe or the US, fulbright is possibly the closest I can get to achieving some tangible goals. Film education is insanely expensive.
can i get to know that when do they start calling?? and guyz please help me reduce nervousness….
i am gold medalist lahore board, bronze medalist FAST Uni.. and GRE 1110 .. i applied for msc actuarial sciences… what are the chances??
@malik. I myself, am a Gold medalist. I cannot release your nervousness but I can only advise you to be patient and calm. Whatever is written in our destiny will eventually occur. So believe in Allah! Whatever is best for you, will come to you. Just relax and hope for the best. Thats what I am doing. I am searching for an adequate job and still in the process of search. I am patient as I believe Allah’s there and will give us what we deserve, at last.
We’re still keeping a healthly scepticism while looking at the various on-line business courses to register on. The info works well for me here and we’ll keep checking back for more insights.
@ DOC thanks for your concern
i am also looking for an adequate job. I applied for bank alfalah but they in the last round (6th to be specific) disqualified me on the basis that i am gold medalist and will get scholarship easily hence i should do masters first in order to get a bond signed lol so my qualification serving as a bottleneck but i am thankful to Allah for what i have achieved so far and still hopeful because still a lot to go and hope for best all the time
@malik: you applied for any other scholarship nationally or internationally until now ?
hey there…can somone please guide me on acturial sciences? I am just going to start my A’Levels so can somone give me info on this field, as in what do I have to do since scratch!! pleease help me!
Hey Ayesh.
For acturial sciences you need to be very good in math i.e. math should come to you naturaly. Also you will need atleast one comerce related subject in your alevels at grade A. Your subject combination should be something like Math, Eco/Acounts, Further Math.
You could also take up an extra subject if ur capable of doing so.
Folks, seems like the interviews have started. My friend’s brother got called for an interview yesterday.
@ doc no i haven’t applied yet..waiting for this one. I haven’t gone through other scholarships yet any idea about others…
@ Ayesha
for actuarial sciences you should be very good in mathematics plus hard work, long hours self study, passion, patience -repeating exams- plus dedication required. This is offered by UK, USA and canada as being major bodies. Pass your A level then give first two exams P and FM all will be clear….if any further information required send me an email on kashif325@gmail.com, i am crazy about this field so will let you know all you need
I have still not received my GRE scores but the important thing is that USEFP has received my score.
For those who have not received their GRE scores, there is nothing to worry about.
Ask USEFP for confirmation that your score has been received.
By the way, is there anyone who has received his GRE score
in case you guys dont receive the GRE score in time … i think the next best option is to register online at ets.org and get a printout of your scores.
@ US what was the area of ur friend’s brother ??
what are the chances of career changers for fulbright any idea!!!!!!! I am BBA student and applied for actuary. The prereq of actuary is engineering degree…will i be able to get scholarship
Malik Shahab dont get too much stress.. Have faith in Allah if the scholarship would be in your fate u ll get it.. otherwise there are other opportunities start looking for them aswell….

Malik sahab

thanks all of you
i am leaving for Islo now
great man ….. do share the interview with us… and they will give you the outline … please do check how many they have shortlisted
Good to see some advancement in the process. Best of luck
Malik
yeah but we have to see how much have they shortlisted this time… lets hope for the best….
If they are to select 100 which they said they would for MS, I guess it would be something around 280?
Lets see, its just a guess
out of 830 in 2010 applied 250 have been shortlisted and number of scholorship would be given depending on the funds available.
Guys be prepared to convince them how this scholorship would benefit Pakistan , your society and what will you teach americans. They are not at all interested in your personal achievements.
Any one who has close relatives in US and/or in engineering and /or has exceptional GRE scores and /or working in multinational organization they will reject you outright. Those who are in research institute and in teaching areas have good chances in getting this scholorsip.

Thats very useful, thanks Ad
@ Ad: did you said they’ll reject those having relatives in engineering? I didn’t get that, why would they do so? I did my graduation in Electronic Engineering. Does that mean I have less chances ??
Hey Ad that is good news… 250 shortlisted it means we all have a chance atleast…
and yes they reject people with close relatives in US.. they rejected last year as well
and they dont reject engineering people as is but it has less priority as compared to other fields
And this time they have increased the scholarships as well
last year they short listed 100 for Phd and selected 70
and 130 for masters. this year its gonna be more this time…
@ Doc
I said those who r in engineering field have less chances, unless u have a teaching or research background and seeking for phd.
@ Ad i said the same …. and how did ur interview went??
Hey i am back all was good mashalah this was very general interview in fact, very pleasant. Those two interviewers from the US were very very pleasant to discuss your achievement………good luck to all of you as well….830 applied and 250 have been shortlisted.
Now only one step left which is TOEFL, hope i get good score and one more thing dont think of your academic records and GRE more critical for this only your PS and objectives matter ……
Great Malik… All the very best to you now just pray i get the call aswell… very tensed
hope you will also get, lemme tell you they have just started the process and they call around 10 people a day so right now just 30 or so have been called so 220 are left … dont loose hope they are calling development and unique field graduates first … you will get it anyway if you have written good PS good luck muneeb
I don’t know about the quality of my PS but I am hoping for the best to happen, especially since they’ve called you malik I am very happy as I have commonalities with u as in i m a fresh gradate and medalist both as u. Please tell me about the essay they asked you to write and tell us questions they asked you and were they looking for your confidence level thoroughly ?
Thank you so much malik… i think my PS was fine bcoz three people read it and they were all professors and their feedback was nice…. i wish and pray that i do get the call as well….
they are calling 30 for one week is that you saying??
and now when are you giving TOEFL
muneeb they call 10 people a day on average and for a week it is 40 to 50 a day….they do have alternates as well. When i was interviewed there were two applications in front of them one of mine and others was of a person with same course applied for (insurance). Agee sab allah ko ee pata hai.
and yes toefl is on this saturday and i am not well prepared for that may i get 90
Good Luck Dear IA u ll get it .. and lets hope for the best…
what questions did they asked you and what was essay title
all the best for toefl dear
Its gud to c this forum is back to life.I used to be an active member of this forum until it got infected.anyways, since its interview time, here is sumthing which might help u.I asked an alum last year about the process and i quote his reply:
“Now coming to the interview itself; it is not going to be tough or technical. From what I remember, on the day of interview, they ask you to appear about 20-30 mins before time. They ask you to write a short essay first. The topic is usually related to one of the current things happening in Pakistan. Like, I was asked to write couple of paragraphs about my views on Inzamam’s decision to take his team out of the Oval in protest.
The interview panel changes frequently but mostly comprise of 4 to 5 people. The panel is headed by USEFP Executive Director, Dr Grace Clark. The rest of the members are usually educationists, not necessarily from your field, but at least one of them from the US.
There are five mandatory questions that you’ll have to answer (questions will be given to you at the time of essay writing.)
1. What is that you want to study?
2. Why do you wanna go to US to study that, aren’t there any opportunities in Pakistan to study that topic?
3. How useful will that be for Pakistan if you complete ur studies in the topic of ur selection?
4. Is there anything apart from studies that you are looking to learn from the US?
5. Is there anything that you know through your culture that you want to teach the Americans?
Rest of the questions, if any, will be based on your answers to the above questions. Mostly about why and how. I don’t think they ask many questions to which there is one correct answer. This is more of a personality test. I am not very sure what exactly do they look for, but my guess is that they wait your intentions to come back to Pakistan after finishing up your studies and if your goals are reasonable to fit Pakistani market.
Interview is conducted in a fairly friendly environment and the panel appreciates people who talk and appear confident. I guess they also appreciate diversity. “
I got selected last year, and I had a fairly average academic record! They like diversity..so if ur from a field with limited applicants,ur chances of convincing them to invest in ur education are high!also they like people who talk and have the confidence.I commited many blunders during the interview, but i have a feeling that i got selected because i was cheerful, confident and passionate about my field of study and degree objectives! If u r shortlisted,ur chances of selection are high!just understand wat they want..simply Fulbright spirit is to promote mutual understanding between the people of USA and Pakistan(or other countries),while USEFP wants to invest in ur education so that u can come back and play ur role in the development of Pakistan!U have to take both these things together..show ur interest in learning american culture or some of its aspect, show them u wont be spending all ur time in studies(they dont like nerds),and dat when u come back,u ll be doing alot more in ur field!
hey this is really a good note by you
i got interview call few days earlier and my interview went good now i am preparing for teofl which is on this saturday. The interview was ended in a very pleasant mode we talked about football and pakistan cricket team
@ Sehar
Thanks alot for that! if i remember correctly you had applied for oral biology right!are you in US already ?!? anyways I didnt even get to the interview stage last time around
hopefully things will work out better this time.. thanks again for sharing that!
Hey seher once again some fruitful advises.. Thanks for that and when are you leaving for US
Best of luck to those waiting for call and result and wish me luck for my visa struggle!
@us..i m glad dat u ve reapplied:)..m still in da middle of visa process which is as tedious and worrying as the rest of the fulbright process:p..i will be flying inshallah by the end of august..still plenty of time..yep oral biology it was:)
great good luck to u too with ur visa interview and stuff..
and which uni u got in
Hello sehar,
I think you remember me, I am Ram, I also applied for Fulbright and short-listed but they couldn’t give me scholarship, actually HEC folks don’t want to give anything to Sindh. However, I applied directly to US universities and I got PhD admission with funding. Please can you share your VISA experience with me? I might go in VISA process by this Dec.
@ Sehar
InshAllah you’ll get through now !! the hard part is done already
.. g’luck with everything
!
@RC
It is good to know you secured schorlorship funding after being rejected by HEC.I wish you an auspicious future.
@sehar all the best for your VISA process and thanks a ton for sharing this wonderful information.
@ malik hey! what essay topic you got?
essay topic was: “the most critical moment in pakistan histroy”
I have a long question for Sehar , RC (and/or other gurus from last year) ..
Here’s the thing .. I have a degree in Mechatronics Engineering from NUST .. want to get a Master’s degree in Renewable (Solar) energy & Embedded Systems..Did a final year project in Solar energy .. Im already working as A design Engineer (R&D) for an energy meter manufacturer in Lahore.CGPA is 3.2 .. Ive designed and sold UPS systems during my final year as well .. GRE score is 760 math , 510 verbal (1270)
Got called for the Interview on July 13,2010 and was the third person to be interviewed on the day.. as far as I know , 13th July was the first day of interviews.. Interview went really well .. the Goras were impressed ..
Now .. the wait is killing me.. literally .. cant think .. cant work .. how did you guys cope with the wait .. and what in your opinion are my chances.. and Should I apply to Universities independently .. btw I cant afford education in the US.. so what are the chances of 100 % funding for Masters if I apply independently ?
Thanks for reading my long long post ..
Umer
@Umer
Am not surprised that the goras were impressed ! that indeed is an awesome profile
i think you wont get to know the final decision until october…. you better come up with some other way of distracting yourself or else its goin to be a looOooOoooOOooong wait for you
well,we used this forum as much as we cud and also continued with the jobs we had!
regarding the independent funding, they depend on ur GRE,teaching/research experience and letter of recommendations! If you have worked with sum1 whoz the expert in his field and holds a degree from a reputable place, and he could give u an excellent recommendation, its going to matter a lot!
I cant comment on ur gre, maybe u shud consider applying to a place where the supervisor are interested in the sort of research/expertise u have no matter if they are not ivy league..
in my opinion its hard to be find funding for masters unless u have a profile like amirali…
@ramchand..ofcourse i remember u..how r u?where did u get admission this time?and dat too funded?wow..share the tips with the people!
Hello all
Ramchand
and
Sehar welcome back
People from whom I got recommendation letters for Fulbright :
1. My R&D Manager, MS Electronics , Pakistan
2. Head of Mechatronics Dept, PhD Robotics & embedded systems, UNSW, Australia
3. Associate professor: MS Controls & AI,USC USA
One is work related & the other two are academic ..
PS: Are there any good websites for finding /sorting thru universities in the US ?
Do they call people who have applied for similar fields together? and also people having similar educational backgrounds together?
no new calls??
@Umer,
Hay dude! your GRE score is pretty good, it will work. You apply directly to US varsities. I am 100% sure you’ll get funding. Dont waste your time at HEC. In HEC you are bound to return back with no F-1 VISA. Means you cant do part-time work in states. If you get partial RA/TA then it is more than what you need there.
@Sehar, I am going to do my PhD at University of Massachusetts. I am busy now, I’ll update you all with my story…please share your VISA experience with me… thnbks..
R
@Sehar,
Sorry, I couldnt ask “how are you?” How are you Sehar? I am fine here in Beijing.
Best,
R
Any updates from anyone else?
The other day when I was taking the TOEFL test , I met another dude who had been called for interview. The trend is that they call 10-14 people per day .. and they’ll only let you know about the interview three days in advance.. so even if you have been shortlisted for an interview .. you’ll get to know only 3 days before..
Btw for masters 250 have been shortlisted and 100-150 are expected to get it .. so good luck and hope for the best ..
any one else got an interview call ?
RC i am frm IBA doing my BBA in fourth year.
I want to talk to you in detail about US universities funding so plz giv me your email so dat i can chat wid u on this topic.
I will be very thankful to you for this
here is my yahoo based ID: raguelmoon
bad news for engineering graduates
all short listed applicants having engineering background have already been called for interview.if you havent got the call uptill now.its over
@bumblebee how can you be so sure? You know someone inside or USEFP people said it themselves? Is the source you got the info from, reliable? I am from engineering background but I haven’t applied for engineering.
@muneeb i think people are not active on this forum to update their status …
btw gimme your gmail id…if you have
yes
this is muneeb06@gmail.com
i hate to give good people bad news(marix oracles dialogue)
but the source is pretty reliable cant disclose for obvious reasons and its over for all engineering background guys irrespective of what they applied for
@Doc dont worry dear… Have Faith in ALLAH g you should pray and wait till the end of interviews bcoz you never know…
@bumblebee as far as i know it has been just 2 weeks since interviews started and third week is going on and the process continues till mid of September.. how can you say this with so much confidence…. is the informer usef representative… i dont think they share such news..
that is astonishing for me as well, muneeb. How can someone be so resourceful as to get the first hand insights of such matters.
@bumblebee: can you please give me your MSN or Yahoo! ID.
bumblebee is wrong .. they have not shortlisted in this manner .. the earlier one gets interviewed, the better his/her chances .. in my experience , people from every field were mixed .. for example .. a few people from my group were from finance, planning etc .. mostly engineers but i think It was a mixed bag .. secondly, one should not lose hope .. according to my sources about half the people have been interviewed.. somewhere around 115-125 .. Still half the lot is left ..
yaar jisko dekho uske paas sources hain . . . and I thought FULBRIGHT is all transparent and crystal
if u ppl dnt want to believe me plz dont…i m sorry that i shared information …just forget that i said anything …KEEP WAITING IF U WANT I DONT HAVE ANY PROBLEMS :@
Hey everyone, calm down. Lets keep things on an even keel here. This is a discussion based forum, not the Fulbright committee’s scouting ground.
That aside, my guess is that there might be some element of truth to bumblebee’s statements. Fulbright might have wanted to get the priority candidates and disciplines out of the way first, or probably the easiest to deal with as the applications of engineering candidates and most technical disciplines are easier to process and compare.
Bumblebee, I’m gonna go out on a limb here and ask you straight out, could you get any info about when (or if…) people with media backgrounds and choosing media degrees ahead will be called for interviews?
@bumblebee
have you been called for an interview
good question …
@Umer
thanks
@bumblebee Don’t take it personal. We are all discussing matters, thats it! No one is against you, we are just surprised and thats why this reaction. It would be better if you could give a hint about your sources in USEFP so that the reliability in everyone’s mind will increase.
btw my sources are the people at USEFP (no inside special ppl).. I just CALLED them to find out how long will the interview process will take and when was the last date I could send in my TOEFL scores ..
PS .. those who do have the USEFP number .. Pls dont start flooding them with calls as they might get fidgety and stop responding to everyone altogether ..
