Comments on: phd scholarships in UK

Hello. I am a Bangladeshi student;
I have completed BSc (engineering)in CSE from BUET.
Now i am doing MBA in Finance in University of Dhaka, Bangladesh.
In future will i be competent to get phd in Tax laws/ Finance in UK especially after not having a business graduation?

I have completed BSC(engineering)in CSE from BUET(Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology)in 2008.
But due to reasons i have changed my track; and now i have been persuing MBA in Finance in University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Eventually i am doing excellent result so far.
In futue i am willing to get phd in Tax laws in UK.
Will i be competent to do so especially not having a commerce raduation.

Maha,

If you have already completed your MBA degree then its highly preferred that you apply directly to the PhD program as it gives you a better opportunity to get a scholarship.

You might want to apply to just 1-2 universities for MS program as a backup. Considering your experience, you should be able to get admission in PhD program.

I have completed MBA (Finance) along with 5 years experience. I am interested to apply for PhD in top 10 business schools in USA but i have heard that it will be highly competitive like masters to get in; Specially with study background from Pakistan. The last recommendation i got is to apply for MBA or a masters from top 10 universities first, then go for PhD. What are your suggestions?

There is no specific score bar that you have to cross in GRE to get a scholarship for PhD. It does not work like that.

Getting scholarship/financial aid is a mixture of a lot of things.

1.) The reputation of the university from which your graduated from.
2.) Your academic standing (gpa and inter/A-Level result)
3.) Publications (probably most important) especially if they are relevant to the professors that you desire to do PhD with.
4.) GRE score
5.) Letters of recommendations.
6.) Statement of purpose.

You have to concentrate on all these things to be able to convince a professor in a university to give you financial aid/scholarship.

The usual strategy is to find professors with research interests similar to yours and tailor your statement of purpose, and research interests to fully match that professors research interests.
You somehow have you prove yourself immensely valuable to the professor.
You need to apply to several universities and appeal to as many professors personally as possible.
If all the stars align right, you get your scholarship

you should also check with your departmetn what other opportunities they provide to studentes applying for phd degree. many universities offer scholarships, RA ship, TA ship etc.

regarding GRE score, the more you get the better it is.
