MBA from Nottingham University or Leeds University Business School

By the grace of Allah, I’ve got an offer from Nottingham University Business School. I’ve also got an offer from Leeds University Business School. I woud like to have your advice as which UK university is more preferable in terms of good job prospects, ranking, and on-campus environment?

I’ve got 3 years work experience from Habib Bank AG Zurich and have already an MBA from Bahria University with 3.75 GPA.

I’ve read your comments at this site and it persuaded me to take your advice in terms of UK university. I would be very thankful to you if you can give practical advice by considering your friend or relative experiences.

    Congratulations on the admissions.

Leeds University Business School has much better ranking and has a better international reputation so I would advise you to join that.

You might want to check the ranking over here

    best of luck.

Thankyou for congratulating me Muhammad Younas. Your advice is highly preferable. Thankyou once again.

IF you can please get some more information about Nottingham Business school. It would be really helpful to me as I’ve already paid 10% tuition fee to Nottingham and feel like Nottingham comes also under top 20 UK business schools for MBA. It can be my wrong perception, but I want to have some furthur information about Nottingham job prospects too from your side after having an MBA from Nottingham. Is it A-Grade University?

    Thanking you for your co-operation.

Mohsin. It certainly comes under top 15 MBA schools in UK. Frankly speaking, rankings doesn’t matter much if they are too close to each other. I chose a 8th ranked university in US over the 4th ranked university primarily because I had more friends in 8th ranked university. I am so happy on my decision that I did that.

You should look at the course content and see which university offers the courses, atmosphere that you are looking for. If you are hard working and the have the eager to climb up the ladder (which from your work experience looks apparent), I have no doubt that you will succeed no matter which school you attend.

Just want you to share with you that now following the completion of your postgraduate degree in UK, you will have a chance to extend your student visa for 2 years and to stay in UK to hunt for a job. You will be allowed to work for any employer in UK after the completion of your degree up to 2 years without any work permit.

So you will have at least 2 years to find a good job where an employer is willing to sponsor you (offer you a work permit).

In case I get to know more about the above two schools, I will let you know.

    Best of luck.

    Hi Mohsin,
In my opinion Nottingham university is at par with Leeds university if not better.
Internationally Leeds university has a higher ranking in business schools, but most of the UK rankings that are internal hold Nottingham to be better than Leeds especially if you take in to account the research that is being done in Nottingham.

Both are good choices. Rest assured that choosing anyone of these will given you the same opportunity in terms of jobs.
The more important thing is working hard and coming in good looks of the professors because they are really valuable contacts when hunting for jobs.

    Best of luck!

    Hi Muhammad Younas,

Once again it’s really good to see your responses quickly:) Thankyou.
Nottingham University is more focussed towards Finance subjects because it’s MBA is called as MBA (Finance). However, Leeds University is more focussed towards General MBA subjects. Hence, as far as the course content is concerned and my previous education and experience is concerned, Nottingham looks more beneficial.
You helped alot in making up my mind … surely, hard work and determination will be more effective rather than just ranking of the university at the end.
Sir, What about IGS? I think 2-years work permit was for Scotland graduates and 1-year is for England graduates? Is there any recent change? If yes, it apparently looks good, Insha-Allah if having a good job at the end. Is it Tier-4 visa for students?
Last, but not the least, how about you? Have you been settled in the United States or working for a company in Pakistan? Hope and wish that everything is fine there, Takecare, Allah-Hafiz.

    Hi Aman Pervaiz,

Thankyou for the response and positive advice. How are you? Hope you are fine there:) Are you in the UK? Anyways, do professors really help in career prospects after having an MBA? I mean if one is in good looks of him/her. Secondly, do you have any idea about NI number? I’ve heard that it’s really difficult to get it? What’s this? How and where to get it for a job? I pray and wish that Insha-Allah Nottingham University will be really helpful towards my career progression. Thankyou once again, Takecare, Allah-Hafiz !!

    Hey Mohsin,

Its a new policy for english students that following the completion of their degree they will be able to work in UK for two years. (It has been implemented on 30 June, 2008).

I agree that in your particular case Nottingham University looks much more beneficial. Best of luck with it and keep us posted.

Regarding your question to Aman that do professors help with career prospects, I would say Yes. Professors often get referral requests from the past students working in big companies. Professors usually recommend those that are at the top of their good students list. So, I would say when you join the program, work hard and leave the rest to God. InshaAllah everything will work out well for you.

Things at my end are great (Alhamdulillah). Do keep all of us in your prayers.

    Regards,
    Younas

    Hi Muhammad Younas,

Your reply at one of the post named as MBA from Londonmet or MA from Nottingham clicked my mind on either side too.
You replied there as London is surely a hub for a job, much more chances for interview calls.

I’ve also an offer from London Metropolitan University for the MBA, but in my case the ranking of Nottingham and Leeds stops me to go to London. Can I move to London after having an MBA from Nottingham? OR Would it be better for me to opt for Londonmet MBA? What do you suggest?

Thankyou for all the responses, Takecare, Allah-Hafiz.

  10. Muhammad Younas

    Mohsin,

Yes you can move to London after completing your MBA from Nottingham. Trust me all these things doesn’t matter much in the end so if you believe that you will learn much more with MBA from Nottingham than go ahead with it. Nottingham has great reputation in UK so I am confident that you will do great.

    Best of luck.

    Younas

You will get two years of work permit following the completion of your MBA degree that will allow you to work for any employer in UK. 2 years is a lot of time to search for your dream job so I would advise you to go with a degree/institute where you believe you will learn a lot and will provide you with a valuable experience.

    Hi Younas,

Thankyou for supporting me in making my decision. You’ve such a great courage to proceed things towards final destination. Insha-Allah, I will be doing better through Nottingham MBA and hope to be recognized with my degree through out the UK, not just Nottingham. Best of Luck to you too Muhammad Younas for all the upcoming endeavors of life and wish you all the best for anything.

    Takecare, Bye, Allah-Hafiz !!

  17. Rudresh

    Hey Mohsin,
How is your MBA going? Is the job market looking up over there? How did u like the MBA? I am planning to take it up from 2009.
    Lemme know
    Rudresh

  18. Mohsin

    Hi Rudresh,

Congratulations for getting admission into an MBA. It’s going well by the grace of Allah but I then opted for City University, London as most of my friends are here in London.

The job market is very tough at the moment and we’re facing competition from Imperial and LSE graduates as well … but at the end I believe that it’s your determination and hardwork which will lead you to success as most mid-cap companies do look for skills rather than only the degree. I wish by the end of 2010; the situation will be comparatively better.

If you’ve got an admission in Nottingham … Go on … It’s good but please look at the contents of courses as it does matter with your past experience … Hope you got the answer.

Wish you all the good luck for your time in UK. Cheers, Bye.

    Hi Saira Noor,

Sorry for the too late reply but I did not really got an e-mail from pkstudent therefore I never know when did you asked the question:). Today, I got the e-mail for latest question and thus I saw your question about Bahria as well.

After having the experience of job market and by analyzing the graduates and employer comments … In my Opinion, LUMS, SZABIST, BAHRIA, IBA, CBM in order of educational priority where you learn something. In order of strong Alumini and you may call it the “Name-Hype” then obviously LUMS, IBA, CBM, BAHRIA, SZABIST.

However, trust me, it’s all hype and you don’t need to really worry about these things as all the graduates from my batch and subsequent batches were getting on jobs quickly within six months but unfortunately the situation maybe different at the moment due to bad economic conditions in Pakistan. One line comment for the MBA … If you can do it by “LUMS”, Great!

Wish you best of luck … Cheers, Bye.
