MBA from London Metropolitan University or MA in Finance from Nottingham University

Dear Sir,

This is Mansoor Lakhany here from Karachi. I’ve almost 2.5 years of job experience and I did my MBA (Finance) from the Bahria University in the year 2005.

Lots of students are getting good and satisfactory responses from the members of this forum, therefore, I also decided to ask or get some advice on one confusion puzzle:) ?

I’ve applied for the MBA in some of the good UK universities. By the grace of Allah, I’ve got an offer from Londonmet (London Metropolitan University) for the MBA and an offer for MA in Finance and Investment from the Nottingham University Business School. I also have an offer for MSc in Finance from NewCastle University Business School. I’m confused now, what to do?

I’ve an only offer for MBA from Londonment. There are so many advices, some are saying that doing an MBA from Londonment is not that worthwile than doing an MA from Nottingham. Some says Newcastle is good for accomodation and all. I would like to know from your experiences that either Londonmet MBA is good as far the career prospects are concerned or MA from Nottingham is good? Or Msc from Newcastle is good?

Please compare them from your experiences or from your good exposure in the International phenomenon.

Takecare — Bye.

    Hi Mansoor,

Can you please tell company (industry) you had your work experience. If you want to keep it confidential please email it consultant AT pkstudent.com. Also are you planning to join the program in coming Fall 2008 or next year Fall 2009?

The dilemma in your case is that though MBA is a much preferred degree than MA, but in your case the university ranking differ a lot. Nottingham Business school is a much more reputed university as compared to others.

You might want to go through the courses offered by the universities and see which of them can be useful to hone your existing skills and can be an add on for your work experience. If you have experience in banking industry or in a financial services firm then I would suggest that you go with Nottingham as having an MSc in Finance a long with banking experience will help you with your job search.

If you don’t have experience in a financial services industry than maybe an MBA tag is better than MA tag. There are many employers who are just looking to hire MBAs who have a wider knowledge about the business industry.

In any case please go through the list of courses offered by both universities to see which one of them can be useful for you and can help you be an expert in your field of interest.

    Dear Mariam Azeez,

Thankyou for such a detailed advice. Your opinions are really helpful. Well, I’ve been working as a Settlement officer at one of the Investment bank in Karachi. If I look at the course content, Londonmet MBA is more towards general subjects, however, Nottingham MA is concentrated towards finance subjects.

But the confusion is, ppl say that only MBA is worthwile, not MA. Some say, Rankings really matters. What have you experienced about Rankings? Does it really matters? MBA tag from Londonmet or MA Finance from Nottingham? Confusion in making the final decision:)? Hope, you can more clarifiy the things in terms of job prospects and ranking there in the UK.

    Regards,

    MAnsoor Lakhany

    Hi Mansoor,

I believe you should go for MBA as having an MBA degree is much more *worthy* in employer eye as compared to an MA degree. You can focus on finance courses during your MBA.

Also by staying in London, you will get a chance to get much more interview calls / job opportunities as compared to any other city.

Best of luck with your career.

    Mansoor,
I agree with ppl’s comments in comparing MBA vth MA. However, majority of the masses consider MA degree with what’s offered in Pakistan’s Public universities. At no cost of what’s ever, these two (MA) degrees can be compared to each other. Ranking does matter if you know the strength of education. As an investment banker, I’d suggest you to go for MA finance which is more quantitative degree than MBA (qualitative). The difference between quantitative and qualitative degree is, the first prepares you for research work(if you intend to go) and career growth in research areas where as qualitative is more sort of theories, management styles, techniques, organizational behaviors and etc. Not only that, quantitative degree equip you to prepare for CFA exam which you might think down the road if you continue in investment banking. Indeed, the scenario would be different if you would have gotten into high profile MBA schools under which the latter makes sense. Therefore, if I were you, and have to choose between MBA(from London Met) and MA(from Nottingham), it would be from Nottingham.

    My Best,
    Sameer

You should definitely go for a reputable school. Secondly you could have applied with schools that offer MBA that is geared towards financial managers or people from finance industry. In my opinion, it is best of both worlds. I have typically heard of MSC Finance, not a MA finance. Either way, MBA finance is the way to go. You get best of both worlds.

It is very imperative to understand the difference between MA/MSc and MBA, and which degree has more value. In addition to what Sameer mentioned, one has to evaluate his/her circumstances and then decide. In Mansoor’s case, as he has already gained MBA plus relevant work experience, you must go for possibile options available in Investment banking, Financial Security Analysis and like.

London Metropolitan does not come in any UK rankings (Guardian/Times Online), as they do not include themselves in those ranking. Any university can be judge in its ability to research, I would suggest try RAE for any UK ranking.

If you are willing to come bank to Pakistan, ranking does not much matters, as I have seen alot of students for low ranked universities like Sunderland, Teeside, Middlesex, who got job in a reasonable time. However, if you can afford Nottingham, you must opt for Nottingham.

I am a student at London Met…the reputation might not be the best, but I think its up to the student what he makes out of his studies… . I am very satisfied with my studies and I learn a lot here. In my eyes London Met is recommendable.
