Accreditation of LUMS SSE

Respected Sir/Madam,
I have got admission in LUMS SSE this year. Only 180 students out of more than 10000 students have been selected which is a big achievement for me but there is one problem. SSE opened last year and i will be a part of the second batch. LUMS SSE is not accredited by HEC yet. Everyone is saying that do not worry bout this because LUMS will get accredited very easily even in engineering field. Have you any idea whether SSE’s accreditation is under process?
Waiting for your reply,
Annie.

    Dear Annie,

Congrats on your admission. It indeed is a great achievement.

You don’t have to worry at all about LUMS SSE so far not being accredited with HEC. LUMS is a very reputable organization and all companies (local and abroad) recognize LUMS degree. I am confident that much before by the time you graduate, this process will also be completed.

Its a golden opportunity for you to benefit from LUMS education. Don’t let small issues like these come your way.

    Best of luck

    Respected madam,
Thankyou so much for responding so quickly.
I guess i can now start engineering from LUMS without being worried. Actually i rejected LUMS business skl offer for admission in BSc(Hons) Accounting and Finance because i wanted to do engineering. This was the reason why i was so much concerned but yr assurity has really helped me a lot.
    Thank You!

    Hi

Well not being recognized from HEC and/or PEC (Pakistan Engineering Council for Engineering Programs) is and can be a big issue.

But as earlier advised by others, LUMS is supposed to get this recognition.

And lets assume that God Forbid it doesnt get it, I am sure that an institute of LUMS’ calibre will ensure proper placement of its students.

Remember one thing, Bachelors students are the earning hands of any institute (around the world). An institute cannot afford losing them just like that.

  5. Khizer

I dont want to disturb your thought process but while getting admission in LUMS Engineering programs, do take into account several factors.

What kind of faculty they have?
What kind of lab facilities they have?
What kind of curriculum they are going to follow?

Inquire as much as you can. After all, this is your future we are talking about. Dont take it lightly.

Further, A management degree from LUMS means a lot. But what about an Engineering degree? I mean its a whole different ballgame. Be thoughtful about it. Talk to engineers’ community in the same discipline. For instance if you are going for Computer Engineering, talk to people from the same field.

I wish you best of luck. If you need any further help, I can be reached at: reicpk@yahoo.com

Well actually i did talk to a lot of engineers. Infact my father is a member of PEC and all of them are pretty sure that accreditation of LUMS is not n issue. If a university like Uni of Lahore can get accreditation then how come LUMS can not make it.
As far as the faculty is concerned, SSE has hired a complete Phd staff who have done even their under graduation from reputed universities of US n UK.
Tha facilties and the campus are extremely impressive. Infact SSE staff claims that this is the best science n engineering campus that has so far been constructed in Pakistan.
N there is another strong point about SSE. I will be a part of one of the first few batches n LUMS would definitely want the first batches 2 get the best employments once they graduate in order 2 make their position strong in this field. Moreover a lot of companies are sponsoring SSE n the whole point of giving so generous funds to SSE is that they plan to recruit its graduates.
Although i still have some fears but i sometimes feel like taking this risk because SSE has chosen the best students from all over Pakistan. You’ll find even 5 As scorers in GIKI n NUST. Infact FAST has given admission in engineering to those having 3 As in O levels while in SSE you’ll find students with 7As or above only.
What do you think now? Is SSE a gud option?

  10. Annie Nadeem

yea i have seen it already. I had never been worried about the faculty or lab facilities. I was just worried about accreditation but a lot of people have assured me that it will get accredited soon so now i m completely satisfied with my decision. Anyways thanku=) C ya on 17th!!!

  11. first batch guy

hteres a lot that u guys will discover at SSE, and most of it will be the problems that this infact school is facing. asad abidi, the first acting dean resigned just in the third month of the start of the first batch. SSE’s most important asset is asad naqvi, a great teacher and expositor of physics, and he’s back to US for research. but he’ll return in atleast about an year’s time. just one thing about their mathematics department, it is moribund and dr. sultan sial is an unapt teacher. try talking to people from the first batch, u know, it will do wonders for u.

    regards.

  12. Aman

Professors will come and go – No good university including LUMS is dependent on one or two professors. The quality of education that you will get from LUMS is not comparable to any other institute in Pakistan.

Don’t worry about these small issues. Focus on studies, maintain your GPA, get the best out of LUMS and I can bet you will never regret your decision to be part of LUMS SSE batch.

  13. Annie Nadeem

well if you(first batch student) have so much against sse then y r u studying in it??

    Dear Anne,
dont be confused about the accredation matters.
Accredation will be done when institute applies to the awarding body.
At your institute when the pioneer batches will be in their final year it will be done as the facilities right now are enough for the initial levels.
This is the the normal procedure.
How can a university applies if there are no students in the final year.?
As the accredation process requires oral questioning from final year students
    Kind Regards,

    @ All second batch students,
Now what are your views about SSE after one month?
    Still happy on your decision?

  17. Ehmad

Errr… I’m a potential applier to the SSE program… and i seriously need some word from existing students regarding how LUMS seems and how it actually is…

    ???

  18. 2nd batch guy

    social life at lums:
beyond awesome.. there are dozens of societies and the exposure that you will get here is simply unmatched, you wont get that anywhere else in pakistan.. there is always stuff to do, you are never bored.. loads of fun..

    negatives of SSE:
-no accreditation yet (but that is not an issue, it will get accreditation)
-building under construction (by the time you come Ehmad, it will be a lot better)
-no Dean yet (by the time you come, there will probably be one.. someone who teaches in Cornell i believe)
-Chem faculty is not what you’d call awesome.. but if you dont want to major in chem, then that is not an issue either

    positives:
-good faculty (all are PhDs from the best foreign universities, 3 or 4 MIT PhDs I believe)
    -focus on research
    -course syllabus is good
    -good environment for studying

life is fun here and i think that that is very important so despite SSE’s flaws i am happy here, and don’t regret my decision at all.. people will argue on this point but i personally think that the graduates SSE will produce will arguably be the best graduates of any science and engineering institution locally..

  19. azylum

Just one question annie…what was ur O-A lvl result OR FSC result????
—-and did u give SAT or any other extra quilification??

  20. Annie Nadeem

@azylum….. i had 9 As in O levels n 5As in A levels… 2 distinctions:) n yea i had 2120 in SAT1 n i din give SAT2 and btw u dont need to give SAT for LUMS SSE.. u have to give their admission test.. But if u r not a Pakistani national dan u can get admission in SSE on da basis of SAT1 n 2 scores… Otherwise SAT scores r not required but if u r planing to apply to da business skls of LUMS then u can get exemption from LCAT if u have 2100+ in SAT1…
@Abdul mugheez…. m pretty happy wid ma decision n m not saying dis because m now in SSE but because i really feel dat m a part of da best students of Pakistan being taught by da best possible faculty wid amazing edu backgrounds… we only have concerns about one faculty member.. N da best thing is dat we r studying all science subjects da way dey r taught in MIT…. believe me its really hard to get da best possible instructors from every field of science @ one place and keeping dat in view i guess SSE has dun a pretty amazing job in hiring its faculty

  21. Annie Nadeem

@ehmad… lyf @ lums is awesome…. da workload @ SSE is immense but if u manage ur tym well u ll be able to maintain a balance between ur academics n social life…. i personally luv da sports complex which has all sorts of facilties ranging from squash courts to tennis courts to gyms….. labs r open 24/7 n dea is a separate gaming area…. da societies here r really active n u can become a part of dem depending on ur interests though u ll have to attend da meetings dey schedule and perform da tasks dat u r assigned especially during da events… i think u’ll get a very gud exposure to da outside world once u r a part of LUMS… LUMS is by far da best possible university of Pakistan in every field and believe me it is really different from da conventional Pakistani universities… though SSE is not accredited yet but i can assure u dat it is not n issue…. bestooo lukkk wid ur admission process:)

  22. Usman Khan

Well .., after reading comments i really feel like i should’ve studied when bro asked me 2 :) btw entry test of lums is on 20th of feb ., not a second 2 spare :P ., guys pray 4 me 4 admission ! c u @ lums INshaLLAH
btw i ve got 413 marks in fsc first year is there any chance of me becoming a luminite( or vtever u call those who study @ lums :) and how much entry test is important in getting admission !

  25. Sheheryar Zafar

i heard from someplace that LUMS started sendin out the result /admission letters via post/courier services..

i dont know y they dont put it online…that way its more easier…

  26. Awais

Aaaall iiiis well, but i am yet afraid yet applying for admission in lums because i don’t know why lums authorities are not taking interest to be accredited see it is an issue, big or small but yet it is

  27. Sheheryar Zafar

    Yea I agree with Awais

  28. Another first batch guy

whoever said that “…dr. sultan sial is an unapt teacher” was totally wrong. Looks like the guy doesn’t really enjoy mathematics, because Sultan Sial’s style of teaching is based on rigorous mathematics.

As for the PEC/HEC accreditation issue, first of all, HEC has invested a huge amount in SSE. Why would HEC not recognise it. Regarding PEC, well, only those seeking govt. jobs would need it, or those entrepreneurs who want to take up an engineering-related contract for some govt. organisation. And even then, if there’s a single person in their group who’s from a PEC-recognised university, that’s sufficient.

hello.i am now addmitted n the third batch of lums but already passed the entry test of giki ,fast and nust.but i have selected lums over the other institutes.is it a good idea.

  31. Third Year Batch Guy

I have cleared my NUST exam as well, but still i think LUMS SSE as a better option, at least we have choices to decide which subject/major to really choose.
