Islamabad:The Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF), in collaboration with the Embassy of France in Pakistan and with the technical assistance of French Scientific, Technical, Industrial and Culture Centre (CCSTI), organised an International Expo on Environment titled ‘The Earth’s Future in our Hands’ at Islamabad Model College for Girls (IMCG), F-7/4, on Friday.
The exhibition aimed to raise public awareness about the urgency to act if we are to save the earth for future generations. It offered solutions to problems, as proposed by scientists.
It comprised three major themes including ‘Living with our Environment,’ ‘Tomorrow’s Consumption and Production’ and ‘Responsible Sharing of Resources’.
The exhibition ‘Living with our Environment’ revolved around the idea that damage to the environment affects less privileged population the most while the mediocre sanitary conditions and the lack of drinking water are essential problems facing the health of world populations.
The students discovered the agricultural revolution that used biological diversity and the variability of the living world, often neglected by the agri-food industry.
On the other hand, ‘Tomorrow’s Consumption and Production’ comprised an experimental model that allows visitors to try a hydrogen fuel cell. The solar oven was another interactive experiment that demonstrated the reality of alternative energy. This islet allowed for both raising awareness of the urgent need to invent other production means, and also a reflection on our consumer society.
The ‘Responsible Sharing of Resources’ revealed that a better understanding of the hydrological cycle could lead to rational management of water and demographic and economic changes. This third and final islet ends the exhibition with a message of hope: “Today, man can avoid being a player in his own extinction”.
As many as 12 experimental models were put on display that included the themes of ‘Inequitable Access to Resources’, ‘Deteriorating Health is That the Kind of Environment Development Needs’, Soil and Agriculture — Towards a Green Revolution’, ‘Climate under Pressure — The Planet Wilts under the Sun’, ‘Energies for the Future — Tomorrow’s Challenges’, ‘Industrial Ecology’, ‘Transportation and Technological Development’, ‘Natural Disaster — Where Can We Live Tomorrow’, ‘Understanding to Act’, ‘Sharing of Know How’, ‘Biodiversity for a Natural Resource Management’, ‘Minerals and Sub Soils — A Heritage to be Prospected’, ‘Oceans and Coastlines and Blue Gold in Danger’ and ‘Knowledge, Access and Usage.’
One of the major components of the expo was a three-day training workshop for master trainers. THE NEWS
