Secretary Clinton Concludes Visit to Pakistan
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has completed a 3-day visit to Pakistan saying she underscored America’s desire to build a broad and deep partnership with Pakistan.
Secretary Clinton said that partnership is based on mutual trust and respect that both combats violent extremists and strengthens Pakistan’s democratically elected government and civilian institutions to serve Pakistan’s people.
In addition to Secretary Clinton’s official meetings, she also participated in a number of town hall and civil society engagements – in addition to media roundtables each day with television, print, and radio journalists – to connect directly with the people of Pakistan.
During her visit, Secretary Clinton announced a number of major contributions to Pakistan, including $125 million to launch the first phase of a Signature Energy Program by the United States to support Pakistan’s energy development.
She also announced $55 million that will assist Pakistan and U.N. agencies to provide humanitarian relief to families displaced from South and North Waziristan and the North-West Frontier Province and $103.5 million to the Government of Pakistan’s priority law enforcement and border security programs.
Secretary Clinton also announced $85 million in funds to the Benazir Income Support Fund and a $45 million American contribution to the Government of Pakistan’s Higher Education Commission (HEC) that will expand university and technical education for displaced students and those students in other vulnerable areas.
