Persons selected are expected to share information about Pakistani literature and culture with their students, colleagues and community groups in the U.S. On returning to Pakistan, Fulbright scholars are expected to make a significant contribution to Pakistan’s development and to share their U.S. experiences with students, colleagues and community groups in Pakistan.

    NOT GETTING THE FULBRIGHT WAS THE BEST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED TO ME.

    I am posting this as a note of caution to any student who is thinking about applying for the Fulbright scholarship. I’m sure the moderators will delete my post but I feel it is my duty to warn gullible students about my bad experience with the Fulbright.

    I did my undergraduate at LUMS and graduated on the Dean’s List. I then worked at the two largest foreign banks in Pakistan for 2 years each. It was then I decided to apply for the MBA through the Fulbright. I took the GMAT and got 750 (out of 800) and then I took the GRE and I got 1500 (out of 1600).

    I applied for the Fulbright that year and was called for an interview. I was amazed by how subjective the interview process was/is. The whole process seems to depend on whether the Managing Director of the USEFP likes you or not. Strangely enough it seems the Managing Director has made up her mind before you even enter the room and is just trying to confirm her opinion during the interview. I am not even going to talk about how condescending and rude some of the other staff at USEFP is. I do not know why USEFP has such condescending people working there because most people in the United States are quite nice so they should choose staff that better reflect the USA. For example I made an appointment to see one of the USEFP advisors, but when I showed up at the Islamabad office she was not in the building. The USEFP advisor then showed up 45 minutes later holding a box of leftover pizza, and seemed completely unconcerned that someone with an appointment had been waiting for such a long time.

    Well I ended up being chosen as an “alternate candidate” for the scholarship that year. Being chosen as an ‘alternate candidate’ meant that I had to fill in the MBA applications for 4 schools (fill in their extra essays, etc) and yet there was a chance I would not get to go if none of the ‘primary candidates’ dropped out. Three of the MBA programs I applied to called me for further telephonic interviews. As it turned out the Fulbright had budget constraints that year due to the recession and did not send any of the alternate candidates to the US. They left me high-and-dry at the end of one whole year of running around getting a passport renewed, getting recommendations and health certificates.

    But here is where I think there was some divine intervention. One of the MBA programs that I had applied to through the Fulbright not only accepted me into their program but also offered me a full scholarship on behalf of the university to cover my entire 2 years of study in the USA. The university was so impressed by my profile that they wanted me to join the MBA even if I had lost the Fulbright funding and were willing to support me all the way. The scholarship they offered is like free money because it covers all my costs and after graduating I can work in the US or anywhere I want. I am now almost done with my MBA program now and I have already been offered a six-figure salary job here in the US. If I had gotten the Fulbright I would at this point be forced to return to Pakistan, but I do not have to go through that fate.

    NOT GETTING THE FULBRIGHT WAS THE BEST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED TO ME.

    @ US Student,

    Which University are you studying in? Thank you for sharing the note. Its very useful and encouraging.

  5. US Student

    @Muhammad Younas:

    I’d prefer not to say where I am Younas. But I can list 5 great places (including the place I am studying) where international MBA students receive a tremendous amount of financial aid from the university itself. Hope this helps anyone else looking for an alternate to the fulbright:

    1. Brigham Young University (Marriott)
    2. University of Virginia (Darden)
    3. University of Indiana (Kelley)
    4. Emory University (Goizueta)
    5. University of Michigan (Ross)

  6. Muhammad Younas

    Thanks @ US Student.

    The whole idea is to help the community so that any one reading this blog – with decent qualifications can get the admission with funding in top universities.

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts and best of luck with rest of your MBA and Job.

  7. mic

    hi, you and I were in the same boat. I was named alternate candidate too. I hope to end up like u being given other scholarship option.

  14. US Student

    @Mazdak

    Here are three MBA programs that offer a lot of financial aid. I would recommend applying to all three:

    1. Brigham Young University (Marriott), generous financial aid and low cost.
    2. University of Indiana (Kelley), gives 80-90% scholarship for those with GMAT around 750.
    3. Emory University (Goizueta), gives full scholarships to all those with GMAT around 750.

    I have sent an email to your gmail account with further details.

  17. Kashif

    how wise is it for an alternative candidate for MBA to pursuse the option. Considering tht MBA program fees are way higher than other masters, even if somebody from the pool of masters drops out, there are very slim chances tht an alternative MBA candidate will make it.
    can somebody also discuss how many alternate candidates have made it in the recent past.
    your responses will help me make the decision!

  18. US Student

    @Kashif

    Well when I applied for the MBA in 2008, several MBA applicants were made ‘alternate candidates’ while some were principal. That year Fulbright did not have the funds to send any alternate candidate abroad. Things may or may not have changed 2 years later. You can read the rest of that story in my post above.

    I would seriously start looking for alternatives. Good luck to you.

  22. Paki student

    Hey US student, I’m currently doing an MSc in economics at LUMS. Did a bachelors degree from a university in the UK. Want to apply for a fully funded postgraduate; program (MPhil mostly) in the US. Where do you suggest I apply, I know the application process is too drawn out and I dont wana be stuck sending too many applications so prolly better of sending apps to places where there’s a brighter chance. Thanks

  23. kanza

    hey…
    i am doing computer engineering from UET,Lahore(final year)…
    i want to do ms in related field…
    can you guide me about the universities in US????

  24. US Student

    @Paki student

    I guess you are going to do a Phd next right? I am not familiar with Phd programs but these colleges are usually very generous towards international students as long as you have good grades/test scores. A recommendation from a great professor like Ali Cheema will also help.

    1. Brigham Young University
    2. Emory University
    3. University of Indiana

    Good luck amina.

  25. Paki student

    Hey thankyou for your reply. To be honest, no, not too ready for a PhD at the mo. I’m happy to leave MSc at lums midway and pursue it elsewhere. So it could be MSc or MPhil or something of the sort. But yeah, I’m gonna check out the 3 you mentioned. As far as recommendations are concerned, I’ll let my undergrad teachers in UK takecare of that? shouldnt be too bad im thinking.

    amina

  26. Abaabeel

    @ US Student

    It is really great that you got a scholarship from the university directly. But you should also tell the people reading your blogs that mostly such universities are very low profile and not even considered for ranking by various ranking institutions. Besides that, everybody here should and must apply for the fulbright scholarship since it is only Pakistan where the USEF is giving out so many scholarship awards (in most countries these awards do not exceed 15 nominees while for Pakistan they sometime reach up to hundred). Having said that, I may also say that being an alternate candidate means that you will be given a chance only if a principal candidate drops out, and in most cases principals do not drop out. So that seems the reason for your not being selected rather than the availability of funding that you have mentioned.

    Certainly, a big disadvantage of this scholarship is that you have to serve at your home country for at least the duration equivalent to that of scholarship, but then dont you think that it is a minimal cost compared to the investment that has been made on the fulbright nominees? So I would advise everyone to apply for fulbright scholarship since it would not only give a chance for admission in a better university but it would also be an honor to be part of the fulbright community. (fulbright alumni network is pretty strong internationally)

  27. US Student

    @Abaabeel

    I agree that the Fulbright scholarship is a great option for some people who may otherwise not have gotten admission at all. But I just want to highlight that there are other options available with greater flexibility. This last year the Fulbright application has become even more cumbersome as they have largely started ignoring your university preferences and send your application to colleges that they think will help in cost-sharing (like low rank universities).

    Thanks for your input. Well the universities that I know of that offer scholarships (and mentioned) for the MBA are top 30 universities according to the rankings of businessweek.

    Therefore I do not think everyone “should and must” apply for the Fulbright scholarship. If someone wants to have greater flexibility and gain experience working in the US after graduation they should look at the many other options.

  28. Random

    A GMAT score of 750 means one could get full scholarship at Emory university? Good thing to tell people. Does that include living expenses?

  51. Ahsan

    Hi US Student or Anybody else,

    I’ve been admitted into Carnegie Mellon University’s(Pittsburgh Campus) Information Technology and Software Management program, but I’m not being able to find any scholarships for that. Therefore, I’m planning on applying for Fulbright, but is it possible that you tell me ANY other scholarship awards that might cover tuition fee and living costs for first couple of trimesters, because later I’m sure once I’m there, I’ll try to get a TAship to cover my living expenses.

    My GRE score wasn’t as stellar as yours though :) … It was just 1360.

    Here’s my email address: ahsan400@hotmail.com

  52. Anon

    @Ahsan:
    There is a scholarship CMU offers to Pakistani students to do a Master of Science in Information Technology (MSIT) under a scholarship called “Heinz Leadership Scholarship”. I believe you have to spend one year studying in their Australia campus and the second year in the USA campus here is the link:

    http://www.heinz.cmu.edu/australia/information-technology-msit/ScholarhsipsAwardsProgram/Pakistan/index.aspx

    This is an ad from a few years back:
    http://www.heinz.cmu.edu/news/news-detail/index.aspx?nid=906

    Also contacts CMU alums like Danial Ranjha who I think went on the same scholarship.

  53. Ahsan

    @Anon,
    Thanks a lot mate. I’ve also been admitted at Heinz College Australia Campus, but unfortunately the Leadership scholarship mentioned doesn’t cover complete tuition fee and living expenses; besides, it’s already passed it’s deadline.

    How can I reach Danial Ranjha?

    Truly appreciated your prompt response!

    Thanks,

  54. Anon

    @Ahsan

    Well if you are applying for the Fulbright the next deadline is May which means you will leave for the US in July 2012 if you get the scholarship. So while you wait you can also apply for the Heinz Leadership Scholarship for admission in 2012. It covers 50% of the cost hopefully a TAship will cover some of the rest.

    I don’t know danial personally but you probably could try reach out using linkedin.com or something.

  55. Ahsan

    @Anon
    I’ve already sent Danial a message over Linkedin. Thanks.

    Right, so 2012… Yes, it’s only when I don’t get any scholarship, which at the moment seems likely :) . I’m also applying for AusAID and Endeavour scholarship for Australia, specifically for CMU.

    However, so far, Pittsburgh option seems better. So, while I’m reaching out for different funding for the next year, I’d love to find something this year.

    Thanks,

    regards,

  61. asya feroz

    SIR i m doing MBA… So, i want scholorship…….

  62. Ahsan

    @Asya, @Qamar, @Sani: “you are doing MBA so you want scholarship” doesn’t give much information or wouldn’t help you in anyway. This forum, I believe, is for Fulbright scholarship, for which you need GRE, TOEFL, a good academic background, and a complete application filed before 16th of June 2011. If you are selected, Fulbright will apply on your behalf in US universities and bear your complete expenses.

    Thanks,
    Ahsan

  65. sohail

    Dear sir ,it is to clarify that recently i have completed my bachelor degree in BBA(HONS)in finance which is equal to 16 year education .kindly can u help me in getting scholarship for MBA(finance) ? i would be very thankful to you …..

  66. Ahsan

    Dear Sohail,

    Thanks a lot for writing! I see you have “recently” finished the BBA, if yes, then you really have to start finding a good job to have a reasonable experience( three to four years) before you could apply for a good MBA program. The good MBA programs, regardless of the field, don’t accept fresh graduates, especially considering the undergraduate schools we have in our country.

    Therefore, I’d recommend to start working as soon as possible and chalk out a complete plan for pursuing business education. It’s important to have a good idea of which business schools you want to go to, what their GMAT average score is, how much average experience do they require, their average undergrad GPA, and IT’S absolutely vital that you have your experience, growth in a professional setting, and future goals(short-term and long-term) aligned with that business school.

    For Fulbright scholarship, please try appearing for GRE and TOEFL. Once you have appeared for these two tests and have scored a decent score, then with three years of work experience, you’d be a good applicant.

    Regards,
    Ahsan

  67. Nida

    I am a student of BPA. Can I please get info about how can I get scholarship as i need to study abroad.I shall be v thankful 2 u.

  68. Ahsan

    @Nida,

    Public Administration has some very good programs all over the world, especially US.

    You should concentrate on appearing for GRE and TOEFL and with a good score in them and a good undergraduate GPA would be suffice for you to get into a good institution.

    You may apply for Fulbright, Endeavour(if you have already secured admission in an Australian University), ADB(also for Australia), and Chevening(Google it) scholarships.

    Thanks,
    Ahsan

  70. amir yaseen

    sir i am doing bsc(hons) in business accounting & finance from G.C.University lahore pak. so i want to get scholarship for more study?

  71. maheen

    @Ahsan me and my friend are done with our honours degree from kinnarid coolege i have done bba and she is done with Bfa and we both want to apply in us universities for masters obviously offering financial aid can u please guide us?

  72. ahsan

    @Ismail

    Sorry for the delayed response. Well, I’m not aware of many scholarships offered to undergraduate level studies, but I do know that if you could get into LUMS or FAST ( in Lahore) you will have a better chance of paying the dues without any familial support.

    Here’s what I’d recommend: try to improve your portfolio i.e. academic background. Try to be a top student, if you do plan on completing your education from Balochistan. This way you’d have a better chance of getting admitted into the top universities within pakistan as well out of pakistan.

    Also, do consider preparing for standardized tests, especially TOEFL and GRE. Most of the scholarships offered and the top universities require these tests as a precondition to the admission.

    Don’t worry and work hard, only these are the things that count. Most of students in Pakistan doesn’t have money to support their education, and are competing only on their skill-set.

    Good luck :)

  73. ahsan

    @Amir… please read my comments above. you are providing any specific question. Just saying that you need scholarship because you are studying at GC isn’t enough to ACTUALLY secure a scholarship. Should you have any specific questions, please feel free to write back.

  74. ahsan

    @Maheen

    You have done BBA, so I suppose you want to further proceed with business education and your friend, similarly, wants to proceed with Finance. right?

    If yes, then, I’d recommend you to get some quality experience under your belt before thinking about applying for MBA. Business is an extremely competitive field and business schools require two to four years of experience at least to consider an applicant.

    Also, meanwhile, you’ll have to appear for GMAT and TOEFL. Almost ALL US universities require these two tests from applicants.

    Once you have good scores, undergraduate GPA, and experience, you’ll be good to apply.

    As far as financial aid concerns, there are limited scholarships for business education, but most of the universities do offer PARTIAL fee waivers — 20 to 40 percent — to the students. Business schools are extremely expensive, so start accumulating money to pay for the fees.

    But, I think once you have gotten good scores and considerable experience, you’ll be capable of finding out the financial opportunities.

    Thanks,
    Ahsan

  75. Dr. Mahe Munir Awan

    Dear sir,
    I am a medical graduate and currently working in public sector in punjab.I want this scholarship to enhance my knowledge and qualification in the field of maternal and child healthcare.Can you help.

  76. ahsan

    Hello Dr. Mahe,

    I think Fulbright scholarship does offer scholarships to medical graduates as well. Just try to check Fulbright website and see their preconditions such as tests, statements etc…

    I think if your scores are good, you have good, quality experience, and you write good essays, you’d get it.

    But, honestly, I don’t have much idea about medical scholarships. :)

    Good luck,
    Ahsan

I want to apply for fulbright scholarship for cullinary arts education. My passion is to be a pastry chef. Is that possible through this prog? please advice

  79. Previous applicant

    @Yumna

    Yes the Fulbright encourages all kinds of students of different disciplines to apply. In your application you will need to highlight why you are changing your field from business to culinary arts, but if your passion comes through in the essay & interview you should not have a problem. 86. sundus khan

    Please advise as to what should be done as preparation for full bright scholarship in the discipline of Clinical Psychology. Is GRE and GMAT the only requirement?

  87. mz

    hi! ahsan. i just did my bba from IBA and want to go ahead for an mba or an msc. in some specific management field. You said somehwhere above that experience to get a fulbright scholarship for an MBA is vital. what would the Min. no. of years of that be?

  88. ahsan

    Dear mz,

    You should have at least two to three years of quality experience. For MBA, this would help you.

    Dear Sundus,

    GRE, not GMAT, TOEFL, and good essays. A decent GPA from a good university do a lot to get you short-listed for FB, but nothing you can do about it now, I think?

    So, work on the other factors. Good luck.

    Dear others(who have done Fsc),

    Please try to get admitted into LUMS, GIK, FAST etc… They are good institutions and provide way too many opportunities once you are done. I know they are expensive, but they do offer scholarships, loan-based programs etc… Seek them out!

    It’s the question of your future, therefore, take every step very carefully. Try surfing web for any scholarships available for Bachelors.

    Regards,

  89. mz

    yeah i called up usefp today and they said 3 years :/ sadness

  90. ahsan

    @mz, no need to be disappointed. You can learn a lot in these three years. These three years would exactly tell you what you want from an MBA. So, work hand in these three years and find out your true passion i.e. what exactly you want from an MBA and which field, in MBA, would suite you best. Good luck

  91. Sumra

    I just got call for Fulbright Scholarship Interview .. Anybody who has given plz guide me.. and let me know what questions do they ask … I am an Electrical Engineer and is applying for MAsters..

  92. ahsan

    Hello Sumra,

    If you have been short-listed, it probably means, you have already secured 80% of the scholarship! It’s a huge achievement. Now, they would just like to analyse you what kind of a person you are and how you can contribute. Please remember the following questions, interview should consist some of them:

    -What value would Masters add to your current skillset.
    -Why now?
    -How Pakistan would benefit from your Masters?
    -How US students can help from your experience? Cultural aspect.
    -Any discrepancies in your educational career, some poor grades perhaps, or any life experiences you have mentioned in your SOP and PS. Remember these two essays by heart, interview would revolve around them.

    Just be yourself and show a nice, positive enthusiasm.

    Good luck!

  93. ahsan

    Ah, one more thing:

    they might ask you about your personality, your hobbies or the kind of books you read, favourite book, any role model, who do you like to see, if given a chance, from history… these are just general questions that scholarship committee’s usually ask. So be prepared and have good insight into yourself.
