Hi,

This is junaid.

I’m a 2nd year mechanical engineering student. I would like to know how much gpa matters in getting a good job.

Thanks

There are two steps in getting the job
1.) Getting an interview call. Good companies get hundreds of applications every day. They usually filter them based on academic achievements including GPA.

2.) Once you get an interview, gpa is irrelevant. All that matters then is your technical knowledge and your interview skills.

So yes good gpa is required to get the initial interview call. However it is not an absolute necessity. If you have known people working in companies, then those people can directly forward your resume and then you just directly skip the first step :)

I have seen countless people with ultra-low gpas in companies like Microsoft, IBM,HP and intel etc.

Matters a lot for further studies. Doesn’t matter much if you can prove worth in the interview but still you might have the disadvantage with the CV’s are shortlisted.

I would agree with both Aman and Corona …. but don’t take their advice as an excuse to maintain a low gpa.

You still have 2 years left in your studies … so there’s still chance to to bring up your gpa.

    Good Luck ..
