I got admission in University of Exeter for Sep 08, my program was to start on 29th Sep 08 and I applied for the UK visa on 18 Sep 08, therefore, my university sent me an extension letter for visa purposes which stated that I can join the university by 13 Oct 08. I got the Visa, but I also got very good marks in the commonwealth scholarship test. I am hopeful of getting the scholarship for Sep 09 session.
I am still undecided of whether to take this oppurtunity and travel to University of Exeter this year of wait for the scholarship next year? What would happen If travel to UK later than 13 Oct ( my university gave an extension letter till 13 Oct, as mentioned earlier)?
If I don’t go for my studies even after getting the visa this year will that put a negative impact when i apply for the UK visa again next year? Also, how should i go about dealing with the situation?
Any help would be highly appreciated.
Regards,

When a student arrive at UK airport, the immigration officer asks for the university letter. In your case since your university has given you an extension till 13th October only, I believe you shouldn’t go to UK with that letter only. If you are serious about joining the university this semester, please get in touch with international office of your university and request for an other extension letter.
Its always great to go on a scholarship particularly if you are not able to fund your studies. At the same time people say ‘time is money’ so wasting one year might not be a good suggestion either. Each of these decisions will have its pros and cons and I am sure only you would be able to evaluate which option is better for you. You should look at the rank of the university you are going, the money you are going to spent on it, your plans following the completion of your degree, how you plan to recover the money you are planning to spend on your education. Think about all of it and make the decision that you feel is best as per your circumstances.
Best of luck with your decision and feel free to ask any question you may have.
Dear Mariam,
Thank you so much for your email, it was very helpful and I was amazed to get your reply within 15 minutes.
Kindly, also tell me would getting the study visa and then not going for my studies affect my visa application next year?
How should i tackle this situation? Should I contact the British High Commision or someone and explain to them why i am not travelling. Advice in this regard would be highly appreciated.
Thanks once again!!!
Usually its not a good thing to get the student visa and not availing it. However, It won’t effect your visa application next year.
You don’t have to explain anything to British High Comission. If you want to go to next year, then follow the same procedure that you did this year and you should be fine.
